Extended Warranty

For those of you planning to keep an F15 for awhile, as I typically do, are you considering an extended warranty?

I think you should get extended warranty from GEICO or similar insurance company. You can opt for it in first 15 months of your car purchase. Its cheaper.

If buying generally best to get the BMW EW rather than the 3rd party EW. But then again some had good success with 3rd parties ( I looked at one where any garage(non-BMW) and rebuilt parts could be installed). I did not buy but can buy up to end of existing 4 yr warranty, so see if you like and sense issues before deciding. BMW did say that the rate may change as it is adjusted yearly or whenever and is transferrable.

Factors for buying: 1st year model on some items of F15 (i.e. 50i has hp increase but same N63 motor as E70). Peace of mind. Drive lots of mileage. Aggressive driver( also ideally first few km's drive slowly to allow turbos proper warm up cool down). Parts are costly.

Factors for creating a self repair fund:
Leased, don't drive excessively, and on resale a buyer may not be worth as much as paid.

Each has benefits and decision is not easy, go with how comfortable you feel.

I would purchase that at the tail of your Factory Warranty. Plus, would consider the extended warranty at that time more if the vehicle has been having issues.

So you can purchase the BMW EW all the way up to the end of the factory warranty? Does it cost more as the years go by?

I believe you can. Cost wise, not sure. Give you dealer's finance guy a call.

Whether you buy an extended warranty or the sort of "breakdown" insurance that Geico offers, you need to bear in mind that both types of providers have done careful calculations in their pricing to assure that they will make a tidy profit off of the vast majority of their customers.

Buying this kind of coverage would clearly make sense for purchasers if the downside risk was on the order of what's involved in health insurance, but the maximum total possible outlay on a car repair is nowhere near what it is on human repair!

I'm not saying it's wrong for everybody, but I do think it's probably a waste of money for most people.

In any event, an added watch out for the Geico program is that it is only available if you buy their overall car insurance policy -- which may or may not be right for you.

As alway, YMMV.
