Undercarriage cover missing?
I had never ducked under my car to see the underbody, but when I looked randomly today it felt like some covers were missing. Does anyone know if my car has missing covers?
See attached photos. One is a pic through the engine compartment where I see the garage floor. Thanks!

My guess is yes but I don't have a 35i. Can't see the garage floor through my 50i. Or see the transfer case from under my car either. Just panels. Even the oil filter and drain are through small cut outs in panels. Nothing is wide open like that. But again that's a 50i.

Thanks for confirming. The next question is whether this presents any potential issues if I don't have covers in place? Could this affect components down there such as the driveshaft over time say from debris , salt etc?

The purpose of that shield/cover is to keep your engine and components as clean as possible shielding it from mud and other road grimes... Secondary purpose is for undercarriage aerodynamics. IMO the cover is not crucial for your car, but it helps.

I'd recommend getting the cover to at least protect the front drive shaft, help from dust and crud from getting into the U Joints.

Anyone have photos of their undercarriage? My SA is saying that it is normal and that 2 other cars he checked out was the same. Hoping to prove him wrong before I drive an hour to bring the car in.

I thought the same until I had the car in for service. While my car was being serviced and on the lift, I asked the technician if I could look at the undercarriage. Across the service bay there was another X5 being serviced we both walked over and looked. Same thing...... so this must be the way the car are made.

Just an FYI...sometimes some models will not have everything listed in the parts diagram and part number index.
For example, if the diagram in the post above was found using the VIN ... it clearly shows (if you have a grasp of the part database) that item #15 is NOT used in this instance because it is grayed-out. And if you look at the part number index below the illustration...#15 will not be listed. In some of the other parts databases (like bimmercat.com or BMWFans.info) the number may not be grayed out...but they all will not have #15 listed in the part number index below the illustration if the VIN was used to pull up the diagram. Again, in this case, if the part number is NOT listed in the index...it means that vehicle does not use the part. Sometimes a model with a different engine or sometimes a market may use the grayed out or non-listed part number...so the same diagram is used across all the models that use those parts. But if the item’s number in the illustration is grayed out and/or the part number is not listed in the index below the illustration...it means that part is not used on the VIN used to pull up the diagram.

I know this thread is old.
While changing fluids on my wife's '18 F15 xdrive35i I noticed how wide open the underside appeared alongside the transmission. The transmission cover seems to be hanging in mid-air by its five screws front & back. wtf?! Did these vehicles really leave assembly minus these covers? That would be a pretty chintzy move, if true. Sort of like my '13 X5 E70 being shipped minus the gas cylinder which holds up the floor in the tailgate - I had to buy that afterwards, as well. So, I ordered the covers and took guesses at the the hardware required to piece things back together... about $200 worth. Anybody else gone down this road? Not quite there...
the existing center underbody panel is not wide enough to accommodate the holes of the new exhaust panel. Down the rabbit-hole I go! Ha. Although these panels are shown on the x35i parts breakdown - it looks like they really go on the diesels. I figure I might as well finish it up. Part is on order. |

Here are a few photos of the underbody with the full panel set going on... Cheers. Last edited by Tomcat_F15_STL; 02-21-2022 at 11:06 PM.. |
