I may made a quick DIY in the forum under someone's thread. Maybe next week I will make another thread specifically to do that. To cut the tip, get the saw and the blade from Home Depot, that probably will cost you less than $100. Just be careful since you will be working upside down. Also, measure it with the bumper on before you start cutting. I never give it an exact measurement, since what I did was a diesel, and the pipe length may be different. So cut it so the pipe from the muffler will be sitting inside the new tip. Then clamp on. Better to cut a little long than too short, since you will then need to bring it to a muffler shop to fix them. See in the attached picture, the tip's pipe end to the muffler have a slit on it. Make sure the muffler's outlet pipe long enough to sit inside and passed that slits, so when it is clamped, no exhaust gas will leak out.

Ok, here it is.
Paid $160+tax at the muffler place to install it, took 1.5 hrs Now I have to decide what to do with two other metal parts. I'm thinking between plastidip, 3m vinyl and painting. Also, I've noticed sound has changed, but I think it is due to mppk. Tips does not change the sound, right, on muffler? Also, what is the thing that attaches to one of the tips, some gages? |

@Mu5e looks good.
That piece on the passenger side of the tip is dummy plug for the flap controller. Your muffler sounds louder since you don't have the flap anymore.

I see, is there a way to put the flap back? This is a nice solid low sound, I think, but I feel it is too heavy for the family car. BMW did all that nice job for higway sound "insulation", bit now I can hear that muffler pretty distinct, especially on the back seat.

I don't see a way to put the flap back especially when the shop already removed the OEM tip. Most of the folks here prefer the flap open all the time. Did u keep your old OEM exhaust tips? If you did maybe the muffler shop could put the new tip to the OEM exhaust pipe and weld it back.

The tip you have is usually paired with the MPE, where the exhaust flap is removed. There is no option to get the square tips with the flap.

The tips are for the 4 cyl (on the 40e), 8 cyl (on the 50i), and MPE options [for the 35i] that don't use the flaps.
Mine is also that color unpainted. It's technically black, but I think it does look like dark gray in the sun. |

The flap is to control the exhaust pressure.
On high RPM, it will open to let out more exhaust gas, which in result spins the turbo faster. On low RPM, it doesn't give you much of an advantage.
