35d or 50i
I've just driven both again and cannot decide. Would a racechip 35d satisfy the lust for that 50i thrill? Still sadly seeing posts about racechip throwing codes, need to use recommended settings it sounds like. 42pilot is the in the know guy on this.

I'm going through this decision process now. Having driven both, the D is nice and smooth with lots of torque, but isn't the 5.0 by any means. If you can live with the bad gas mileage and the uncertainty around the longevity of the N63tu engine (since the N63 had known problems) then the 5.0 seems like the way to go. I usually buy, but may end up leasing this time around, giving the risk to the dealer. For now I'm leaning towards the 5.0, but I'm waiting until the UDE in DC to decide which and buy.

35d with a Racechip. I'm @ nearly 16,000 miles and not one code thrown. I've had our X5 at sea level to 14,000+ feet. She runs strong. Oh and it throws down 30+ MPG @ 80 MPH. The wife likes that sorta thing.

I've raced a friend's 35d with racechip for fun (giant closed lot) and it wasn't even close. Not sure which settings he was running.
Honestly though there is rarely if ever the occasion to use all that power on the streets as it reaches ticketing speeds almost instantly it seems. That being said I would definitely buy the 50i again just for the power and awesome sounds. The only thing I've had to do is add two quarts of oil once in 16k miles. |

I see you are in the Midwest. I recommend looking into diesel regulations wherever you are located. I had the same debate, and was leaning towards the 35d since it was the wife mobile/family truckster. I then saw Minnesota's imminent B20 mandate, and that was the end of that. Just research what this fuel has done to Mercedes diesels (they have an extensive write-up), and you could probably understand why I landed on the 50i. If we were leasing, fuel quality probably wouldn't have swayed me, but we want to keep this one for awhile. That said, as a car guy, I'm happy the 50i landed in the garage, especially since we were replacing a '13 X5M. Very happy with this motor.

I went with the D and a chip. Same amount of torque and mid 30s for mileage. But, if you are in one of the B20 markets, it's up in the air as to when you'll have issues.
How's your Toureg with the fuel?

In Wisconsin so no fuel issues yet, but must admit I have not given this much thought. B20 is not a positive option. Need to research it further I guess. Keeps getting more complicated.

I would say, either one is fine, since you will chip either one of them.

Regardless of the price + fuel costs, the 50i is just out of this world.
