Purchasing a 2017 X5?

First time BMW buyer. I am looking at a 2017 S 35i with 30k miles. It is a CPO so it will have warranty until 09/2022.

I know it will cost more to maintain than our Lexus suv. Anything to be concerned about with this model? Any troublesome maintenance issues?

Read the fine print. Cpo doesn't cover a lot of things considered maintenance. The 35i is fairly reliable. No common issues.

Any options I should look for?

It's got some nice options. Not fully loaded, but good. My biggest concern would be the s drive. Just be aware they tend to sell less than the x drive. And you'd have a hard time selling it if you moved north. How much they asking?

Offer them $35k and buy it. You don't need X drive in Texas. This is my fifth X5 and first with S drive and I very happy with it.

When do brake pads typically need replacing? Are tires costly for the 20" wheels?

Around 30K miles or so depending on how it was driven.
Also I would look for a Msport with Adaptive suspension option, it makes a world of a difference in handling.

Lastly, if you go to Tirerack.com and enter in the vehicle information, it will show you the OEM tire sizes and cost.

Good luck.

Depends on the tires but typically the rear tires range from 300-400 a piece, front ones a little cheaper

Multi-Contour seats

Multi-Contour seats are SOOOO much more comfortable than the standard comfort seats. I was well worth it (to me) to trade in my 2014 X5 w/ comfort seats for an X5 with multi-contour seats. With the 20 way adjustment, they're the most comfortable seats in any car I've ever driven.

The one I am looking at has the M sport package with the sport seats. Are these different from the standard seats?

Yes, those seats are different. There are essentially 4 different seat options for the F15.

-base/standard seats
-sport seats
-comfort/multi-contour seats
-comfort/multi-contour seats w/ ventilation

Sport seats were standard with the M Sport package on the 35i - comfort seats were standard on the 50i M Sport. I believe on the 35i, if you want the comfort seats, you need to find one with the Luxury Seating Package, and that will also include the seat ventilation as well. Highly recommended option, along with M Sport... and a whole bunch of other options & packages I'd recommend too...

And as mentioned above by turboawd, be careful of CPO. Dealers charge a noticeable premium for this warranty and it's only good for 1 year/unlimited miles beyond the 4 year/50K mile factory warranty. And it's not as comprehensive as the factory warranty - lots of exclusions. Waste of money IMO.

Regarding tires... hmm, well I've been driving X5's and M3's for years so I've become immune to tire prices. Compared to your Lexus, yes the 20's are expensive. And these X5's eat through tires if 20 or 21 inch, believe me. By 20K miles they'll be nearing the end of their useful life. But they look really good (OEM 21's look even better )!

The model you are considering is decently equipped; however, I personally would want: Driving Assistance Plus Package and X Drive.

I’ll note that the Assistance Plus package saved me at least twice from an accident. As for the X Drive, it is not just for “snow”, but will improve handling in inclement weather but also improve traction.

Just my 2 cents. Good luck!

It's a somewhat basic build. I'd download a PDF brochure for that model year and take a look at all the options that were available. See what's a must for you, and find an X5 that checks all the boxes.

The only other nice to have options that the unit I am considering does not have is the assistant plus package, LED lighting (although the standard includes LED daytime running lights and LED tail lights). And ventilated seats.

Trying to stay in the mid $35k price point with low mileage and remaining warranty. I did receive a listing for a 2018 x drive with 36k miles black on black that is what I would consider fully loaded. $73.9K retail. It's listed at $44k so almost $7k more than the unit I'm looking at.
