f15 self levelling headlights
Hi. I’ve noticed a few times lately that my self levelling headlights (when they do the up and down on start up) only the left moves initially and then tries again straight away. At this point they both move and all is ok. What could this be please? Thank you.

It may mean you not only have self leveling lights…but you may have an upgraded headlamp option like adaptive LED headlights with VLD (variable light distribution).
Do you know what headlight option (code) you have? The video below shows the VLD initiation movement at start up: What happens if you start up and then put the car in drive, then reverse…does one of the headlamps move every time you change from drive to reverse (see video below)? VLD…left headlight moves when you go from drive to reverse, back to drive then reverse, then back to drive:

Since there was no response from the OP…don’t know if they got the info above yet…but again, the LED headlights go through a “reference run” upon engine start up. If the above videos is what you’re experiencing then they are acting as they should.
Here’s another description of the reference run that occurs on engine start up: Engine start

Yes that is what they used to to. But occasionally only one moves (left) up and down the other not. Then the left and right move together as normal straight after. I’m unsure what is happening to the right one when it doesn’t move.

i wouldnt say anything is defective. the car is running its checks and if youre not getting a fault then nothing is wrong. also if you have the wheels turned it will do a different "dance" than it normally would.
