Lightbulb New to BMW.. 40i vs 50i

Thinking of picking up a 50i or maybe possibly a 40i. I’ve never had a BMW before. Looking at some between 30 and 50,000 miles. What types of things should I be looking for at the dealer? What things should I be steering clear from?

You’d want to post this question in the G05 section.

50i is a twin-turbo V8, 40i is a single turbo I6. The latter is known to be more reliable (but only available on the G05 as mentioned above). I think your real question here is if you want the F15 or G05 generation, and you'll have to drive both and come to your own decision in that regard.

In my opinion the G05 is similar in most ways (interior and driving feel), a mild evolution that feels slightly more modern. I think the redesigned exterior is the biggest upgrade.

Like Vivek. stated above, you're comparing 2 different X5 generations given the year ranges you mention, not just 2 different X5 models. Sounds like you have some reading up to do!

But for quick reference...

F15 - 2014-2018
G05 - 2019+

The 40i did not exist until 2019/G05 - it's a turbo-charged inline 6 whereas the 50i is a twin turbo V8. For the F15 generation the inline 6 was badged as a 35i (or 35d if diesel).

G05 (40i) B58 is probably way more reliable than the F15 V8.

The V8 on the F15 is pretty reliable. But the G05 is the safer choice.
