Does This Look Off--M Performance Exhaust Tips?

Just had my 20k service and complained of a fluttering noise at low speed/rpms. Had master tech join me on a test drive in order to duplicate the sound and he heard it.

Just picked up the car and they replaced the MPE and tips, but now after looking at it in the garage, I seem to think the tips are a bit more extended beyond the bumper than before. Is it just me or does this look bad?

Mine was the same. Sticking out slightly looks better to me and highlights the tips just enough to be noticed.

Thanks Alan
BTW, you've been down this road as well with your previous X and this fluttering noise. Replacing the MPE didn't solve the problem. Maybe I should get an X5M also!

In my case they tried to do the same.

Replaced my full exhaust with a stock one the dealer had. No change
Replaced the turbo with a brand new one. No change
Removed the belts to eliminate any accessories causing it. No change
Removed my transmission and ran the engine. No change
Removed the MPPK software. No change
Removed the oil pan to see if there are any signs of rod bearing failure. No sign
Checked oil filter for metal shavings. No sign

All in all my process took 5-6 weeks before i told them enough is enough. You can keep the car because i don't want it back. It was sitting on the lift for with half the drivetrain just hanging off the car for way too long.

Keep me posted on what happens with yours. I think at the end the dealer replaced the entire engine and sent it back to BMWNA to auction.

Will do

Just reread my previous post and I didn't mean to say replacing the MPE didn't solve the problem for me--I was referring to your situation.

This is my wife's car, and unless it doesn't start, she doesn't give a rat's...I'll need to wait until the new MPE breaks in a bit to see if I still hear the noise.

I had a fluttering sound coming from the engine... This is the end result: new motor!

^ Dang...that's some flutter. What was the root cause, any idea?

Is this fluttering actually bad? Or just a noise? In other words, does fluttering lead to engine implosion?

Mine was more a metallic ticking sound from idle to about 3K rpm only. You notice it way more if you are driving next to a wall because it echoes off it. Didn't matter if i was in sport or comfort mode, hard or soft on the throttle. It just starting ticking out of the blue and the dealer never figured it out. After the trade assist they ended up swapping in a new motor.

Scary that this is actually becoming more common with N55 X5's as of late.

I guess I'm glad I've got a N63 then... but then again we have our slew of problems.

OP, that definitely looks like it sticks out more than it should.

My "fluttering" noise appears to have been resolved with the new MPE. Borrowed it from my wife this morning and I could not duplicate the noise.

And I no longer find the exhaust tips to be odd looking.

That was exactly the same symptoms I had with my car... BMW engineers were on site to try to figure out the problem, never did. So, motor got replaced.

Honestly, I am sure. I took the car in thinking something was just loose and easy fix. In the shop for 6 weeks, never got it back!

Same here. I brought it in thinking it was a simple wastegate rattle fix or something needed to be tighten but it turned into a 6 week ordeal for me.
