Ouch. What'd you leave in there?

I seriously think cars with Surround view need to support continuous recording from all cameras automatically for like 30-60 seconds after an alarm is triggered. It may help identify what happened and who did it.

Someone vandalized the front and rear left side windows on my wife's old Nissan (DURING DAYTIME) which also had surround view. A freaking recording would've busted the idiot.

My backpack with laptop in it. I don't think the alarm even went off...? Unless it turns off after a certain amount of time.

Time for a dashcam.

Some asswipe made it to the underground parking structure and broke into 5 cars last night. It's not hard to enter the parking structure since he'd have to follow a car that opened the gates, which doesn't close immediately.

Man, that sux. Friend of my wife had her brand new Audi wagon broken into and her purse stolen from the front seat. I constantly preach to my wife to not leave stuff out in the open, even on the back seat or back floor.

no video in the garage?

Are you serious? My wife's Nissan had the alarm go off when the same thing happened. Can't imagine a BMW wouldn't.

Either way, sucks that it happened and can't undo it.

Let us know how that dash cam works out!

Hate seeing that. Only happened to me once, and that was in my Dodge truck. They smashed the rear window out and stole my subwoofers.

I do have to say though, leaving your backpack with your laptop in your car in this day and age, just really not smart. My company has a policy that NO laptop is to be left under any circumstances in a vehicle. The only place I hide items, is in the storage bin where the spare tire goes.

It looks like break-ins are more common that not. I vacuumed the hell out of it but I'm sure there is fine glass lying around in places I don't expect them to be. I might do a couple more rounds.

There are a couple cameras in the building but they're not in every corner of every place. Just the main areas, such as garage entrances, common stairway, etc. It's been hectic so I'm getting in touch with the community manager tomorrow to see if she has caught anything on footage.

Yeah, I am a cautious person with a healthy dose of skepticism but for the life of me I don't know why I left it in the car yesterday night. It was pretty well ensconced on the floor of the rear seats and the car parked in the apartment parking structure as usual. But that's life I guess. You never know what may happen. At least no one got hurt. I'm still alive and well and that's what matters. The laptop was begging to die anyway

Off to calling a couple places for auto glass replacement.

Oh man that hurts

Maybe put stuff under cargo cover if it covers it completely. I don't think dashcam can help, just because it's very difficult to catch random junky using some smudgy face picture, let alone it's usually not the best lighting and they may wear hoodies and such. Even if you get clear picture - small chance police will declare manhunt for stolen laptop from the car

Dashcam is good for accidents tho, I agree 100% with that - to have proof for insurance it wasn't your fault, but for break ins - I still think it's better to not leave anything in the car, sorry to rub it in

Man, that hurts me just to see this pic! Sorry you had the misfortune of some d*ck breaking into your vehicle. I agree with others that the surround cam system should also double as part of the vehicle's security system (as well as a cam that records the vehicles surroundings under hard breaking or during certain protocols, i.e. Impacts, roll overs, intrusions...)

Again, sorry this had to happen to you.

Sucks balls but I've learned long ago to always put any bags or anything of value in the trunk or hidden under the seats/glovebox for this very reason.

If you have things that look interesting to a thief, they are going to get it... alarm system or not.

That sucks. Maybe its the New Yorker in me I always put all bags/jackets hidden in the trunk area when i park.

I highly recommend the Thinkware F770 dashcam along with the Celllink Battery B combo sold by blackboxmycar.com. I have this set up in my X5M and its awesome. The external battery allows it to record for about 1.5 days without draining the car battery at all and I haven't seen any "battery discharge" warning from the car with this setup. With modern BMW's being ultra sensitive to battery draw while parked the Celllink is a must have.

I appreciate all the feedback and concern over the situation. Learned a very valuable lesson over this. Don't leave anything in the car! Even if it's well hidden.

I still don't know how the thief saw the backpack. It's dark navy blue and placed on the floor of the rear seats, right behind the driver's seat. Rear windows are factory tinted, front windows are not. But I tried looking through the front windows and windshield and there's no way they could've spotted the backpack. Or they probably saw a small part of the bag and took the chance.

Anyway, that's gone but I am still safe and sound and that's what matters. I'm going to get the window replaced with Pilkington glass at a very good price, much lower than what I expected, so I am glad.

Everyone stay safe and take all your belongings with you, even if your car is parked in a seemingly safe area!

Thinking about doing this setup, how long will it last if you do two cellink batteries?
