OP is referring to Active Sound Design, where it funnels and amplifies engine sound into the cabin. Is it really fake though?

I would VERY MUCH love to find a simple "on - off" procedure to evaluate the ASD feature!
More experienced forum members strongly recommend a coding route to defeat ASD, a route that I have not yet followed because I believe (wrongly, maybe?) that from a cold start I may need two-three learning hours to be able to code safely and also that I may risk giving BMW an excuse to void my extended warranty (or just plain lazyness, I admit...) So, let me ask three questions to the coding specialists: 1. once you got the cable, how long did it take until you learned enough about coding to feel safe doing it? 2. Is it not simpler to locate and unplug the ASD unit? 3. Does anybody know how ASD is enacted? Is it a fully sinthetized sound based on throttle, speed, etc., or an amplified sound picked up by a special microphone? |

I believe it is just playing back a sound file.
If you aren't comfortable with computers -- building them, taking them apart, etc -- I would just pay someone else to code it for you. Not worth the risk. |

Coding ASD off is very simple. If you don't know how, just ask someone who can code in your area. You can post your request on the 3 series forum, more audience who can help you in your area on the 3 series forum.

I'm referring to a weird highish pitch almost warbly sound that I only heard on the X5M when the engine is revved out. The X5 50i didn't have any of that sound. I figure it's the synthesized sound everyone keeps talking about. To me, it kind of put me off. I wish they wouldn't do that kind of stuff. Augmenting the existing sound is one thing but creating some other unnatural sound is just dumb in my opinion.
Anyone who has turned it off, did you notice a big difference or just slight? I'm wondering if the engine itself just sounds weird for some reason. I've had the twin turbo V8 in my 550i for quite some time now and know very well what that motor sounds like. The X5M was different. |

Finally, the above is written in full respect and appreciation for the long established coding thread in this forum and the people, such as JNoSol, who generously contribute to it. |

Good point, not only Europeans!
I thought so because, to get the cable in Europe, shipping is usually cheaper from an European Amazon branch, the software comes from Romania and most (but not all) coding experts advised here are US based, whereas I live in Southern Europe. |

Tempting as this is to turn off, I am worried that some of the low frequency noise im hearing/liking in the exhaust note will disappear. The exhaust note is the one thing in the car that hasnt impressed me, I like the back firing and all, but really crave the deep V8 burble like the tt Mercedes engine.
