Now I agree, that for us 1% of enthusiasts M cars are more desirable and hold value better. That been said I will always chose 2015 50i over E70 X5M - the difference in tech, interior and exterior is by far largest between 2nd and 3rd generation of x5. A lot more difference then there is between 3rd and 4th (G05) generation and a lot more than there was between 1st and 2nd. The gap is enormous. And as far as straight line performance goes 50i n63tu does 1/4 mile in 11.83sec confirmed on track with basically tune only - which is to say E70 X5M with tune only will not be able to show anything substantially higher (if even that). On track it's another story. M wins there hands down. |

Come on folks. I expect we’ll get a G05 50i or F85 X5M thread soon.

But the fun factor was something I'd never experienced in an SUV of that size before. But it's not the right car as a daily driver at all. The 5.0 would be a much better choice for that.

Interesting. I drove the GLE, and I liked it quite a bit, just not as much as my F15 X5 50i. Top notch SUV though!

Regardless I'm talking about the regular gle which is just ugly no matter how you look at it and is boring. But it's reliable. Also have an order in for the 2020 gle which looks to be a technological tour de force. We shall see

2015 5.0. If the performance difference was an issue- you can MPPK the 5.0 (I think) and/or add a Race Chip. It will make a difference. I think if you can find the 2015 with the M-Sport option- the 130 mph governor may be significantly higher. Either way, it'll suck the headlights out of an SQ5, (my neighbor has one- so that's my juvenile benchmark... :-) )

Lots of threads on DHP on this forum, all of them singing the praises of this option. When assessing the merits, try to assess whether the poster offering an opinion actually has DHP or not.
I am lucky to have one of those rare cars that has DHP. I have not driven an X5M, so cannot compare to that, but have driven X5 M Sport with adaptive suspension and the difference is night and day. Active sway bars dramatically reduce body roll when cornering. Torque vectoring (however it is implemented) really helps with turn-in when cornering - no hint of understeer. If it's available, and all other things being equal, going for DHP is a no-brainer. At the end though, as others have said, try them both - go for whichever you prefer. And enjoy. |

Funny you should mention this I actually ordered the GLE63 Coupe with the night styling and AMG exhaust back in 2015 but decided after the car arrived I didn’t want it…

We're talking about a high center of gravity, 5K-lb SUV. It doesn't much matter what you do - DHP or not - you cannot defeat the laws of physics and have this thing handle like a sports car. Can you make a small difference when you're accelerating on an onramp? Sure. But I suspect almost no one on this forum is tracking their X5 or driving it to their very limits. If you bought an X5 for its cornering abilities, then I daresay you've bought the wrong car. If you really want a car that that handles like a sports coupe, get an M3. I have both. I don't expect my X5 to ever handle like my M3, and I don't intend to drive it for that purpose or that extreme. If you really want an even more practical car that handles closer to a sports car/sports coupe, there are a few wagons out there that fit the bill. But again, a high CoG, large, 5K-lb SUV just isn't it - not built for that purpose. On the other hand, I completely understand people's desire to have their X5 handle better than other comparably-sized SUVs. Totally fair. If we're talking about things in that context, then I completely agree. I also agree that all things being equal (price included), of course it's better to get DHP. It's a no-brainer to have that package. But the discussions on this forum from folks who've probably never driven on a track re. DHP are pretty comical in general, as if it'll take your X5 and turn it into a 911 GT3. Does it make a bit of a difference? Of course? Is it a complete transformation of the entire vehicle, making it handle like a sports coupe? No. Also, FWIW, if you're out of warranty, it can get pretty expensive to fix the DHP if it breaks down. One of my close friends runs a BMW repair shop...ask me how I know.

The skidpad numbers for an x5 with dhp and summer tires is something fairly ridiculous for an suv, maybe .95?
While you can feel the height, you definitely don't feel the weight like you'd imagine. I'd say my x5 handles better than my old 335 in terms of speed but the 335 "felt" more planted due to the lower cog. |
