WHat do they run & trap in the 1/4? Mod friendly? I assume it would cost quite a bit to mod them, though...

Interestingly, here's a 2015 model which was significantly faster....

These are very tune friendly. You can achieve +67HP, +82HP, or +92HP using 91, 93, and 100 octane respectively - from just a stage 1 software tune, which usually run under $800.

If you prefer a hatchback or 6spd manual, you can buy a Golf R, which have the same drive train and share the same platform as the S3 for much less money.

Its weird but makes sense to buy the S3 used and the Golf R new. For whatever reason they depreciate at different rates. The Golf R can be had for less than an S3 new, but if you can do an S3 that’s a 2-3 years old, you’ll save 15-25k over a new one.

Speaking of Golf Rs - have they been discontinued? They only have a 2017 Golf R to configure on VW's website, and there is not a single new one listed on autotrader.com anywhere in the country.

Check vwvortex. Everyone is complaining about VW holding them in port for whatever reason.

18's are just delayed. New 7s DSG, Virtual Cockpit and LED headlights. No extra power for the US though.

Oh yeah, and double the warranty of '17's. Worth noting that '17 GTI's and R's are currently available new for up to $10k off MSRP.

I have only one explanation for this and that is-

The VW golf r is one of VW's most premium models and is very very rare... hence it keeps its value.

The Audi on the other hand is built of a base Audi and is one of its lowest models plus its considered an entry level luxury car which adds to that depreciation...

...all things considered and the options on the cars, I have no idea why anyone would choose the VW (even if new) over a 2yr old CPO Audi.

They're holding Golf Rs? I've only heard of RS3s being held at port

You can get a 2018 GTI but not a Golf R. So people are getting GTIs or S3s.

That is odd. S3 and Golf R have the same drive train. Wondering why they would hold the R and not the S3

My understanding is that at this moment, RS3s and Golf R's are being held... no idea if its emissions related.

Go drive a loaded A3 S-line Prestige with Sport package - it is very much the same car without the engine. The price difference between the A3 and S3 is only $2-3k if you load up the A3. The competition for the Audi S models are the 135/235/335 models, not the M cars. I don't know about S3, but the A4 with sport package is the exact same suspension and wheel set up as the S4. Hell, they even have the same body kit with the A4 S-line. Slightly smaller brakes and lacking the "sport differential" (both you can upgrade in the A4), but that's about it besides the engine.

Ever since Audi started diluting things to sell more cars, I've not seen the S models as an enthusiast cars. The S4 used to be a legit M3 competitor back then. Now you need an RS5 to get the same.

I think as a whole we agree... just like 320i w sport suspension is identical to the 335i w sports suspension. The difference is that I believe the difference between an M3 and a 335i is faaaar greater than the difference between an S3 and and RS3. I dont particularly buy into the rs hype as the only difference is the 5 cyl engine, a reworked diff and slightly different suspension (all of which no one can actually specify). The rs3 even rides on identically sized tires unless you get the staggered front tires (and some say the difference in traction / handling could be caused by that). In bmw's case, the non m 3 series ride on a completely different chassis code and are designed around shitty runflat tires... the M3 has virtually everything across the board different. I'd be willing to put money on it, that if you tuned an s3, put identical tires on it and were able to retune the diff to more rear bias, it wouldnt be far off a stock Rs3... again, remember these cars are not designed to be track focused like the M cars... and that is the massive difference in philosophy and the way they drive.

Congrats! I'm a fan of A3/S3s but one question I have is, if you don't want to get a non-M BMW, why are you okay with a non-RS Audi? These two cars are in the same category (235i and S3).

Again, good pickup, the S3 does some things better than the M235i (sedan vs coupe).
