X5M Winter Setup Ordered - BC Forged RS41

Just ordered my winter setup. BC Forged RS41 Black Chrome - 20x10 front and 20x11 rear. Contis DWS - 275/40/20 front and 315/35/20 rear. (same tire size as the F15/E70 with staggered 20s - same rotation diameter front and rear)

No info on offset, BC makes that judgement based on the vehicle. You can view thousand of photos of those who have BC, all their offset are just perfection...

BC Forged RS41 are fully forged from T6061 Aluminum. Race proven, extremely strong, and extremely light. My research (I'm a maniac when it comes to research) shows that you simply cannot go wrong with BC Forged and it's a bonus that they're competitively priced compared to other Forged Wheels. I chose black chrome since it looks nice with Donington Grey and they blend in with the tires better. I was debating between RS42 and RS41, I like the mesh look so I went with RS41. You simply can't go wrong with either options for the X5M.

There is a 3-4 week wait since these are custom built for my car, milled from blocks of aluminum. I'll post photos as soon as I have it. Teaser below...

Hit up PYSpeed.com if you guys need pricing. Eric is a stand up dude to deal with.

Tires: I owned 4 sets of Contis DWS, 2 on E70 X5 / 1 on F10 RWD / 1 on F02 RWD. They clawed through snow and ice like tank tracks, while being extremely quiet. Almost too quiet. They also last 35-40k miles per set. DWS is much better than pure winter tires on AWD. Also, very affordable.

My review of Contis DWS: http://www.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=760813

What do you guys think?

Those should look pretty great. Would be interested to know what kind of pricing you ended up with for them.

I was partial to the BMW winter setup mostly because any damage to them would be covered by my tire and wheel warranty.

I'm not a fan of square setup on any cars, unless it's FWD or for track weekends. These are staggered and will clear our brakes. Plus, only forged wheels deserve to be mounted on M cars.

PYSpeed.com will PM you for pricing.

Here's a side by side comparison of satin black RS42 vs black chrome RS41. Both would look really good on an X5M/X6M.

Thanks... I'm excited for the winter setup and play in the snow. I had DWS on my E70 X5s, took it up to Vail/Copper Mtn for snowboarding trips. They're rock solid on snow, ice, and heavy rain. I felt very secure with those tires vs the OEM Duns that came with the E70 X5s. OEM Duns were just awful... Noisy and no grip in bad weather.
PYSpeed.com will hit you up with pricing.

I am unfamiliar with US tires classification.

In Europe winter tires with enhanced low temperature (below 7 Degrees C) grip have a snowflake symbol on the side and are different from M+S tires.

Are DWS tires low temperature winter tires in this sense?

Thanks for clarification!

DWS stands for Dry Wet Snow. It's an all season temp tire. It's not a true winter tire, so it won't have the snow flake symbol. It performs well in the winter, much better than ordinary all seasons tires as many tests shown on YouTube.

The U.S. doesn't require true winter tires on cars.

I think these look fantastic, the RS41 in black chrome is going to look awesome on the Donington Grey and while I've never owned the DWS's, I've always heard positive feedback regarding them from everyone that has them.

Using this complete setup will also allow for the 'winter set' to be on longer so that your not wearing down dedicated snow tires.

I know there's allot of pro's and con's to dedicated winter tires, although with all the XDrive X5's we've had we've never had anything more than the Michelin Latitudes (255/50/19) that both my wife and I have driven through the worst of Chicago winters and they always performed well in the winter on both snow and ice.

The Conti DWS was always going to be my 'go to' tire if I ever did the upgrade on our E70 X5 from 19" to 20" wheels.

So of course a true winter tire will be better in snow and ice.

But the wheels looks very nice.

Thank you. I'll do the RS42 Satin Black for my Imola Red 6GC. The 6GC came with wimpy 245 tires all around.

My review of Contis DWS: http://www.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=760813

What do you guys think?
Beautiful rims and good job getting those steam rollers off the truck for the winter. However you are mistaken that the DWS are "much better" than a pure winter tire its really not close in snow ice performance. The rubber of the DWS is much harder than a snow/ice tire, it also doesn't have anywhere near the amount of siping that winter tires have that provide millions of "biting edges" chipping and grabbing the snow and ice. The snow/ice tires also have compounds that absorb the water that forms on top of ice and packed snow wicking the water away from it so it can grab onto much grippier dry ice. The whole tread patter is designed for one purpose and that's snow traction so while the DWS is a perfect all around tire it cant compare to a snow/ice tire its like saying the Michelin pilot super sports are better for track than a Hoosier R6 Slick.

I have tried almost every combination of tire here in the north east and can speak from experience. DWS is great for an all around tire that you keep on year round and it does everything good but nothing great. Snow/ice tires transform the winter driving abilities and make driving stress free but are way to soft and loud for a premium sport truck since they kill handling. Performance Winter tires are the best balance and what I would pick in a vehicle of this class but have not looked on tire availability in this trucks monster truck size. They offer way more traction than the DWS but are much better to drive in the dry than a snow/ice tire.
