That's incorrect. You can Google around and find the answers, but I'm going to explain the taillight situation for a bit since there is often confusion regarding the legality of tinting taillights.

I can't speak for every state out there (although it's probably true for all states as you'll see below in the Porsche picture), the rear reflectors (reflectors, not taillight housing) has to be red and the front side has to have amber reflectors. The taillight (light, not housing) needs to be red and visible from 500ft but the color of the housing does not have to be red.

Here is the law for my state (Illinois) regarding taillights:
Every motor vehicle, trailer, or semi-trailer shall also exhibit at least 2 lighted lamps, commonly known as tail lamps, which shall be mounted on the left rear and right rear of the vehicle so as to throw a red light visible for at least 500 feet in the reverse direction,...

Here's a 911 with the factory option clear lights. I'm pretty sure this is an option for all 50 states.


Notice although the lights aren't red and don't reflect, the car does have reflectors underneath, like our cars. Another car you can check out is the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, which has darker taillights than the standard Cayenne (but the reflectors below are the same.)

Now some cars have integrated reflectors in the taillight housing (I just noticed you own a few previous gen 3-series... go check your taillights!) If you tint those taillights it's automatically illegal as you've tinted the reflectors as well. The previous gen 3-series sedan had integrated reflectors, here's an example:


So there you go. But tinted reflectors are illegal, just so you guys know as a lot of people are buying the painted reflectors from iND.

But yes, my car is still illegal as I tinted my rear reflectors and yellow sidemarkers (plus I have a laser jammer and various gadgets attached to my front windshield... doh!) But it has nothing to do with the taillights.
