i have sapphire and i like the look of carbon too. if you have a dealer close by go there and check out their paint swatches - you can look at the 2 next to each other. There are definitely different.

2 very nice colours, but quite different.
Black Sapphire transitions from a very deep black in the shade/overcast light, to a very strong metallic in direct sunlight. Carbon Black also has the very strong metallic in direct sunlight, probably more than BSM, however in shade/overcast light it looks like a muted blue colour. There's definitely more variance in Carbon Black, however having owned both in a short period of time, i'd say the Black Sapphire is significantly more stealth like. Carbon Black looks more premium/luxurious though. Black Sapphire - http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1188835 Carbon Black - http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=509

Like WCH said, CB in sunlight is blue, a deep navy blue. If you want a true black, go Sapphire. We chose Carbon for my wife because it was different, and I've always liked it since they had it on the e46 M3. When we were at the dealer, we saw Donnington and Carbon and the carbon with Mugello was a combo we couldn't pass up on.
What surprises me is that BMW didn't offer a Jet Black and Carbon Black as the selections. |

If you want something more black, but with mystery and blue in it, pay the little bit extra, and get azurite black. That's one of my all time favorite colors. Black in almost every lighting, except direct sun, and then the fireworks come with with incredible depth and beauty, with various blues and a small hint of turquoise at certain angles.

I have carbon and I love it. In direct sunlight it looks definitely like a dark blue car, but at night it looks black.
I'll post pics when the weather finally gets nice out. |

I was on the fence when ordering mine, I went with Saphire Black and regret it everyday. If you're leaning towards CB, go for it!

My husband and I made this mistake before. Black Sapphire is pretty, but it's really just a sparkly black when it comes down to it. Carbon Black has so much more beauty, depth, and interest to it, in my opinion. I still think Azurite Black is the way to go, if one wants a very dark blue, bordering on black.

This is such an interesting topic. I debated this quite a bit and lost a few night's sleep anxious about regretting my choice as my Sapphire was chosen by my wife. She was right though I think . The Saphire is a purist black and the stealthy compactness it brings in combination with the M Performance CF interior and exterior body kit with the risk of appearing a bit diluted by addition of any shades or hints of Blue. Secondly, you must also decide on an exterior colour based on your interior colour choice as it could enhance or corrupt or dull the true characteristics of your exterior colour choice. For me my Silverstone interior works very well with my Sapphire but Boy it would have been a killer with an Azurite Black which I think is the most regal of all the black BMW offerings. CB lies somewhere in the middle. In a nut shell IMHO , what Black you choose depends on the overall package not just the colour iby itself. Just my two cents mate !

Got mine last Saturday, Black Sapphire.
Executive package, Driver Assistance, full leather interior, 21 inch rims, Parking Assistant. What a great car. For those of you who are concerned about the harsh or hard ride that magazine journalists are talking about, it is total rubbish. I don't know where these guys come from. They must have been test driving Lexus for too long. It is comfortable in comfort. I drive it in Sports everything most of the time. I only have it in Comfort for the 1st 10 minutes to have the car warm up. |
