21" Winter Tires Availability

Hi all

I am trying to find any options for winter tires and there seem to be only two - Yokohama or Pirelli Scorpion RFs. However, neither of those are available.

About a year ago, Discount Tire offered me full set of Pirellis Scorpions RFs for $2.5K but at that time I was living in TX with only a few winter days so I did not buy it. Right now the same exact set is going for $3.6K+, almost pushing $4K after fees/etc; however, even at that price the closest dealership near me said that they *may* have hard time getting them.

When I called Discount Tire shop this time (different state now) they said that they can't get any of them - neither Yokohama nor Pirelli. They offered a set of 19" tires instead for $2.4K with 235x50x19. However, I am not sure if this would work, as I've heard that aftermarket wheels/tires could case a transfer case issue.

Some have suggested downgrading to 20" but I am not sure where to get them, at what price, what size and if any calibration is needed after wheel/size change.

Any suggestions welcome!

My Dealer here in MA has a set of brand new, 20" 611m winter wheels with the 285 scorpions (non run flat) all around....this is the standard winter set for the X5M....for $3800. Crazy you are seeing tires for more than that.

Not sure who suggested 19in wheels. They surely won't fit over the M brake calipers. I could be wrong, but it would be tight. Would look silly too!

Transfer case concerns are about overall diameter of the tire. There is a thread on that somewhere. As long as you stay within a certain tolerance of that diameter, you'll be fine with aftermarket wheels.

I have my 21" 612m wheels for the summer and the 20" 611m set up for the winter. It's so nice just being able to slap them on myself instead of having tires mounted and dismounted every year. Hope this helps some.

OEM 21" tire availability has been and continues to be pretty sketchy, so not surprising you can't find winter tires in the middle of winter

I would avoid aftermarket wheels and find a set of OEM 611M's which are 20" - lots of X5M's came with this wheel so it's definitely a safe OEM setup. You can always buy new from dealer, otherwise check the classified forums here, usually there's a few sets for sale like the one below:

OEM 19" inch wheels will clear the M calipers, but not sure about this aftermarket set Discount Tire is offering. And agree the M calipers behind 19's look silly, the caliper is very much hidden.

I may have found 21" Pirellis for 3K, fingers crossed. Calling them tmr.

Never have I thought I'd be happy to pay *only* $3K for tires LOL

Tires seem to be scarce all over, I just picked up a new set of 20” Conti DWS06+ and Discount Tire called me and said they won’t have them until the 30th and that there are only 32 left in the US and they’re going quick.

I still have to buy a new set for my 22 summer wheels and planned to go MPS4s, hoping it won’t be difficult to find when I do buy them.

I imagine the 3k is for tires, mounting and balancing? I expect to pay the same for my 22s when I get them. Kind of insane, but hopefully will last me a while.

Anyone know/ opinions on running a 295/40 or 295/45 on the 21” 612M wheels? I’ve seen that 295/35 is ok but want more sidewall…

I also have the 20" 611 factory winter set up but may not even install them this year, I hate the look, my M is mostly driven on weekends and I can drive my truck when it snows, will possibly sell them

To be honest, they look more like all season tires to me than winter ones haha

Nice bro. Ya, they work good. But all the snow is gone here, lol.
I went to the more 'expensive' tire shop as everything else was closed,
Charged me $250 CAD even. What an arbitrary price, lol..

Yup, same here. I paid $250 USD for the mounting/balancing.

I have got 21inch wheels on my 2014 x6 with 285/35 and 325/30. Right now looking for winter tires and should I be getting same sizes or go all 285/35s? Have anyone experimented or any suggestion

I bought my X5 in May of this year. It has 13,000 miles on it and the dealership is telling me I already need new tires. I have Continental 275/40 R21 Y XL. Is this normal to need tires at such a low mileage? Is there another tire I could get that could possibly be better? Any suggestions would be appreciated!! 😊

I am currently running 295/35/21 Pirelli winters on all 4 corners. They work but the stretch on the rear looks weird and can't say I love it. I am still looking for Yokohama Blue Earth in the correct sizes...
