Back again..in another X5

Good morning All,

Just recently bought a new to me 2018 BMW X5 xdrive35i with 47k on the clock. Pretty freakin loaded and its a nice suv!

I used to have a 2016 BMW X5 xdrive35i until I gave it to my parents who are still driving it.

I previously had a 2018 BMW 340i MPPSK and it had super low miles at 17.5k and sold it last weekend. It was the perfect 340i and I miss it but I do not miss backing out of my driveway that was on a hill. Talk about a nightmare trying to get up and down without scraping.

Back to the 2018 X5. It is a nice suv and it is a good change of pace to not have to worry about being lowered and afraid to scrape everywhere since my 340i was lowered on Bilstein B14 coilovers. The interior def needs a detail..to my standards as the dealer half assed it.

I am looking at adding the MPE and BM3 to the x5 as my 340i had the BMW MPPSK installed and it sounded amazing and the power was awesome. Definitely missing the sound and power..so that is first on my list of mods and a charge pipe.

I do have a few issues with it that arose this week and this morning running errands. The x5 was delivered to me on Tuesday..so I haven't had it for a week yet. The x5 is msport with 21inch oem wheels, adaptive suspension.

First issue is, I noticed this when picking my parents up from the airport on Tuesday night...when the windows are down and I am driving slow, maybe coasting...I can hear from the rear passenger wheel area a shh shh shh..almost like the brake pad in constant contact with the rotor...maybe just lightly laying on it to get that shh shh shh noise.

This morning when I was out running a few errands to Home Depot and other places, I could hear a noise from the driver front wheel area, almost like I was slowly running over rocks but it was a smooth surface.

Any thoughts? Kinda having a little buyers remorse right now..

Thank you!

- Jeff

Sounds like a brake shield. Just prolly a little bent. Nothing to have buyers remorse over. Free repair.

Brakes are the easiest and cheapest parts of these cars.

Thank you for the input! I am taking the x5 in next Friday for an oil change and a few other things and I will mention that to them.

I have been thinking about getting the M Performance brake kit for it..so that is a possibility.

Welcome back into an F15! Sounds like a nice spec, including OEM 21's (599M?)... any pics to share?

Yah just have the dealer/shop check it out when you bring it in, hopefully it's nothing serious.

Just bought the MPBK myself, would recommend!

Thank you Jiggs! I plan on having the dealer check it out when they are doing the oil change.

If you dont mind me asking, where did you purchase it from and how much?

Here are some pics of the 340i and the x5"

I might pull the trigger on the MPE next week. Honestly, the stock sound is very weak. I might go through getbmwparts.com to get it.

Looks great!

I got the MPBK through my dealer, they matched online pricing with getbmwparts.com (which has the best online price that I've seen), and also didn't charge me any shipping costs so it ended up being even less than online.

That is awesome your dealer price matches. Mine doesn't and its a little frustrating. So I might just pull the trigger and get all of my parts from getbmwparts.com

Did you install everything yourself?

The parts department at BMW Seattle definitely doesn't price match in most cases, but I went through my service advisor this time and he was able to beat online pricing. FWIW, I've been doing business with them for 20+ years so he typically goes to bat for me with stuff like that.

Part of that price deal was them doing the install, so they took care of everything. And unless you're knowledgeable at vehicle coding, you'll at least need to take it to the dealer to have it coded afterward.

Yeah, that is what I figured. So it's totally worth it?

I keep inching closer and closer to getting the M Performance Exhaust...the x5 is just way too quiet for me. BM3 isn't far behind either.

Is there a way to adjust the ride height inside the cabin? I have OEM bags..feels like it's sitting too high.

I'm very happy with the kit, it definitely out performs the stock setup and looks really good. With that said, it's a lot of $, especially if you pay a shop to have it installed. So unless your brakes need replacement soon and/or you just hate the stock brakes, it may not be for everyone.

I have no personal experience with the MPE as it's only applicable to the 35i, and I have a 50i. It's too bad there's so few exhaust options for these vehicles.

There's no way to adjust the ride height unless you lower it. You could lower it like many here have done, and retain a mostly stock look (or you could slam it on KW's!). I did the Eibach kit, though that's designed for the standard suspension (springs on all 4 corners/no rear airbags). You'd just need front springs and rear lowering links and you could shave an inch off to improve the look.

Good to know! I also read the F85 calipers and rotors work too on our vehicles...I will need to do more research..but I will be interested in that too.

Oh I know. Next to nothing out there. I will likely buy the exhaust here within the next few weeks.

I might do that later on...just getting use to the bags...feels floaty to me compared to my lowered 340i on Bilstein coilovers! Will just take some time to get used to.

I already changed out the mirror caps and will be replacing the front grills. I hate chrome.

FYI, On your sports x5 model you can easily get better sound by unplugging the exhaust flap, (coding it out doesn’t work), so just unplug it, it’s above the muffler, you don’t even have to jack up the car.
However you have to select sport mode first and don’t shut engine off, then unplug the electrical connector on the muffler. If you do it with the motor off the flap closes and unplugging won’t do it.

Is this the kit? How big of a job is it for a DIY'er with a garage?

Edit: I searched the forum, found a bunch of info.

Hey KrisTallx5! I picked this up in Little Rock, Arkansas. Single owner with a decent maintenance history behind it. I have an appointment with my local BMW dealer next Friday, the 16th for an oil change, other things I want them to replace and to look over the x5.

There are a few issues / noises that I keep hearing so I plan on getting those addressed as well.

I do want the x5 in the best shape as possible (running, interior / exterior).

Not sure how long I will keep this one..maybe a year. I already miss my 2018 F30 with the B58 engine. So I think a 2020-2022 x5 that has the B58 engine or splurge a little and get a 2020-2021 X3MC. I sure do miss the power on command to pass someone..

You should find a reputable bmw Indy shop. In my experience if the car is out of warranty bmw dealership is only good at breaking the car not fixing it. But if you do have warranty you will be fine. As in my experience warranty cars they don't break them.

I have actually been going to my local bmw dealer since 2009. I have a great relationship with the service manager and the few SA’s that are there. I have never had an issue with them and they have serviced my 6 different bmw’s over that span without incident. However, when I went to a bmw indy shop.. that is a different story for a different day..not good.

I know not all bmw service dealers are good but I don’t have any issues with mine.

It's funny that I posted the above last week. I dropped off the X5 to the dealer this morning (got a brand new 7 series..the ugly one as a loaner) and for them to take a look at the above concern..the one where I am hearing a shh shh shh shh shh when slowly coming to a stop, the SA said it will be $190 to take a look at it, its a new rule now. I was like, okay..$190 for everything to be looked at with my several concerns...he said "no, its per item that needs to get looked at.." I was floored.

I will keep the group updated as I hear what is going on with the x5..
