Anyone here had a long road trip with x5?

Hi,

I'm planning a road trip with X5. It will be about 5000 miles.

I'm pretty sure it's gonna be okay and it might be even silly to ask such question. Since I had so many issues with my previous 328i. I thought I should ask.

Anyone had a long road trip with x5 before?

Any tips?

I've taken a 3500 mile road trip with my 50i and a 1750 mile road trip with my 35d. No issues with either and my favorite road trip vehicle in the fleet. I don't really have any tips or tricks, other than adaptive cruise control - it's a great time to use it

Longest trip for me was about 2500 miles over a week. No issues. Rain-X the windows, new tires and cruise 85-90 mph!

How many miles on your x5? I would at least change the oil, filters and make sure the tires are in good shape, pressures correct. Carry a tire plug kit and compressor. I came out of an airport once and had a flat rear tire. Was fine when I parked it. Found the screw in the tire, jammed a plug in it without removing the wheel, inflated and was on my way in 10-15 minutes. Way better than waiting on someone or changing a spare, which I don't have anyhow.

Nice!! I have only 12500 miles so far. I plan to take my car to a dealership for a service before I head out. Yup, just placed order for the tire repair kit. Hopefully, it's easy to use. I never had to use it before lol

Went to FL from DC and did over 1000 miles each way + about 800 miles while there, within 7 days. Did oil change before the trip. That's it. Averaged over 35mpg. Awesome road trip vehicle.

Great vehicle for long distance trips!

I have the multi contour seats, and they are really comfortable. Not sure how the standard seats would be for long distance driving if that is what you have?
I test drove a 35i with them and didn't like them at all.

Recently did a 3,000 miles round trip, and did a 1,500 miles round trip a couple years ago.
First one was on stock springs, rear air. Second trip on H&R VTF springs.
(I do not recommend long distance trips with VTF if you have family or friends who prefers comfort..)

Road noise not bad at all with 19" Michelin non RF tires on last trip. Previous one I had 19" OEM RF's and they were a bit louder for sure.
Switching to 20" wheels and non RF tires soon, will be interesting to see how they do if I end up taking another trip somewhere..

I carry the BMW tire kit with the 12v pump, and no spare, and had my vehicle serviced a couple weeks before the last trip. Decided that's all I needed, and was fine.

I did a pretty long road trip on my 50i with a buddy and I..very pleasant drive but gotten really tired and sleepy..so I handed the wheel over to my friend. He wasn't too familiar with bmw and a v8 engine..a little jerky and short stops gotten me nauseous..I took back over and went on! I rather be the driver not the passenger I've learnt.

I've taken a 24 hour trip in (2)12 hours segments in mine. No problems at all. Even when I could find only cheaper Octane gas (91)

We did a ~6500mile road trip in a 2 week span about 1 1/2years ago... from Houston Tx to Colorado to Wyoming to Montana to Idaho to Oregon down 101 to LA California to Nevada to Arizona to New Mexico and back home... had a absolute blast with 4 adults!

Some standard things that I took was, Distilled water and Bug wash, 1 Qt of oil just in case, mud/snow socks, Fixaflat and an actual tire fix kit, small air compressor and Hotshot Diesel additive... sometimes adding a bit extra for the comfort at "sketchy" stations in the middle of nowhere...

Did about 550 miles one shot from Columbus, OH to NJ. Very pleasant drive, I'm 6'1 and found the multi contour seats to be very good, the car glides on the open road, doing 100 feels like 60 I'd find myself surprised every time I looked at the speedo. Make sure maintenance is on point, tire pressure etc, I'm sure the motor will enjoy flat low rpm cruising instead of high rev stop and go traffic lol..

One of the reasons why I've got X5 instead of a smaller BMW - we make a lot of road trips. F15, especially right spec'd, is the ultimate road trip machine and I haven't had a single issue during our trips. Our longest trip so far was about 4000 km from Toronto, ON to Halifax, NS with all the stops (Montreal, Quebec, Moncton) for about 2 weeks. It was an awesome trip and a very pleasant drive.

Just pack your stuff, throw a pack of water and go!

The car is surprisingly fuel efficient when you drive fast. There are many cars struggling to drive 70 mph, the X5 will hum along at 100 mph with no effort at all.

For a 5000 mile road trip, I would get the oil and filter changed, plus make sure coolant and other fluids are topped up. I usually take this opportunity to use a fuel cleaning like Techron--I always fill double the recommended amount.

We just drove 1250 miles. 625 one day to see grandson graduate high school. Then 625 back. Lightly loaded two adults we averaged 26.2 on i35x. We saw 100F outside more than once and stayed cool easily. The car needed its nose blew out and I noticed quite a bit more snap joining traffic the home leg.

About 350 miles roundtrip. A breeze for the V8 to handle, but looking forward to a trip to SF (from LA), or if feeling adventurous and find the time, all the way up to Portland, OR.

I bought my X5 new a few months ago, knowing 4 days after I picked it up I would be driving Dallas to LA for relocation. What a break in!

It was a great car for that drive...even loaded with 2 Dobermans.

This...

I recently took a 500 mile trip expecting to have the same experience as other SUVs. I was so surprised at how comfortable it was especially cruising at 90-100. I felt like I was in a 5 series but with the added practicality of the rear hatch, making pit stops to the cooler fun and relaxing.

I love the wide tires/ass.

Even better would be taking the extra time to do the whole trip on the coast using Hwy 1.

Before the long trip, just do a quick wash and apply spray-on wax on the car, specially the front. It will save your time washing off the dead bugs after the trip.
