Front brake pad/rotor replacement advice
Getting ready to replace the front brake pads/rotors for my first time on a BMW. If anyone has any helpful advice/tips or things to watch out for, it would be greatly appreciated!
Planning to purchase pads/rotors/pad sensor wire/rotor retaining screws. I don't intend on flushing the brake fluid because I had the dealership flush all fluids (brake/coolant/transmission/differential) last year as I had owned it for 2 years and had just gone over 50,000 miles. I plan to clean up the hubs with a wire brush and sandpaper once the rotors are off. Any recommendations on specifics to help make sure I get them cleaned well but not so well I deform the surface of the hubs and no longer have a level surface for the rotors to mount to? Plenty of videos out there on how to replace the pads but I couldn't find any videos specific to the F85 for replacing rotors. I've always thought rotors should be changed any time pads are changed. Is that not true on X5Ms? Thanks again in advance for any input! |

It’s common to get two sets of pads for each rotor. If money is no object, then changing rotors doesn’t hurt. My rotors had tons of life left when I changed my pads at 60k or so.

If you don’t needs rotors, don’t buy them. Check the thickness and go from there.
Get Powerstop pads if you want less squealing and reduced dust.

My F85 just passed 100k miles and looking at the service history, it doesn't mention they've ever been changed, though pads have been replaced 3 times. |
