I drove the RRS Supercharged for a weekend. It's, as said in the video, just mental. There's no way I'd buy that car, but it does, I admit, put a smile on your face to hear it power up.
Thing is, what the heck is it? It's crazy fast. It's also ungodly thirsty (I got single digit MPG without really getting on it that much, if you really nailed in it stop/go traffic, you could probably get it down to 5MPG). It doesn't handle as well as the X5. It kind of reminds me of the older (5.0) Mustangs of my childhood that people hooked a Paxton supercharger up to. Hellaciously fast. And also way overpowered for what the car could really do. Don't get me wrong, it's a fun car. But, IMHO, it's like getting a Dodge Viper with a class 3 trailer hitch on it. If you need a trailer hitch, a Dodge Viper isn't the car for you. If you need a drag car, a RRS SC isn't the car for you. Sure, it can do it, but, you pay a lot for the capability and it's very unhappy doing it (as evidenced by the gas pump). I'll never forget, after about 30 minutes of around town (with some hard starts, but not to the floor) putting the RRS in my garage. I went out about 30 minutes later to get something out of the car and I thought my garage was on fire. That's how much heat this engine was dissipating into the space. It's mental. |

Reminds me of the Jeep GC SRT8 that I test drove a few months back before deciding on my X5. Begs the question..."Why?!?!" Who needs a sport ute to do that?

In all honesty - I don't get why people film something like this; it's useless across-the-board. I just can't see any point whatsoever in comparing 510 bhp vs 381 bhp. What did they expect, reinvention of laws of physics?
P.S. RR is stone age to me from the tech point of view. Starting from their infotainment system and getting down to the CO2 emissions of their power-plant: 348 g/km CO2 vs 242 g/km in the 5.0i (won't compare it to the M50d, because that one is in a league of it's own with 177 g/km CO2 - find ANY other SUV/SAV on this planet that sprints like that and emits that little). I know it doesn't matter much in US where cars are cheap as dirt (had to go there ))), but in EU... oooh, yes it does! |

Drag racing SUV's. What's next, cross-overs? If I want straight-line speed, and have $70k in change, it won't be anyone's SUV. It still cracks me up that we can get paddle-shifters on these things.

Drag radial style tires that have wear characteristics like an adult actress, cost more than new skins for my actual high performance car, and are useless in 90% of the US for a few months a year make me cry. I just don't know why manufacturers insist on doing stuff like this. An M3, I get it, people drive them on the track. An X5? I'd wager every dollar in my pocket that the amount of snow driving compared to track driving across X5 owners in the US is something like 1,000 to 1. So, of course, let's put a mild track setup on the car that's worthless in the snow. SUVs, at the end of the day, as much as we all love them, even in the best possible trim, are very poor sports cars. There's just too much weight/height to overcome; all the money you spend trying to get the thing to move and turn just comes "stock" when you buy a proper sports car. Think about trying to setup a Corvette/M3 for offroad use and how it would do compared to something like an x5 or RRS. |

So what are we suppose to do with a 445HP SUV that sprints from 0-60 in 4.3 seconds and handles corners better than most SUV's on the market and even better than some sedans out there?

Regardless of how pointless it is to race $70k+ suvs it still would have been nice to see how a 50i would have done in the test. 4.3secs to 60 seems a bit off to me but I've never timed my own.

We buy these things for very personal reasons and the contents/result of a bullsht video isn't going to make me feel or think any differently about my purchase. Its possible I am missing the point here - maybe there's some pure entertainment quality somewhere...
