Strange black marks on X35d at the door junctions
This one has me stumped. Wife's new x5 has strange and reappearing black marks on the ground effects where the doors come together. The worst one is where the front and rear doors come together, but they seem to be in all the locations (front of the front door and rear of the rear door). It's hard to get off, feels almost like grease. Any idea what it could be? Some prep stuff that they use that's leaking out? Anyone else have this problem?

Does it appear as a line running from top to bottom along the skirt below the shut line? Sounds similar to what I have on my car. Have you any pictures? |

I think it must be the residue from rainwater mixing with the grease/oils within the door frame as it has a kind of waxy feel and you have to rub hard or use a cleaning solution to remove. |

It does take a bit of rubbing (be sure to do it with plenty of soap) to get them out. Seems odd that they happen in that spot. I wonder if they also happen on non-M sport models too.

What colour is your F15? Mine being Carbon Black does not show up too bad, if you have a light colour must be quite noticeable.

Hello brothers in arms Same story here, although after a car-wash I just drive around for 10-15 minutes and easily wipe them off with a wet cloth. Maybe 6 layers of nano-ceramic treatment help it, nothing sticks to my baby

It may be cosmoline. Its a rust preventative that I believe BMW slathers on their cars for shipment. It takes a while for that stuff to run out of the crevices of the vehicle. My 335i had streaks from the bottom of the door gaps for over a year.

Same problem here, especially annoying on a light body colour. Whenever I get the vehicle serviced, I'll be asking them NOT to grease the door hinges.

Yup. That's exactly what it sounds like... cosmoline. I've seen it on a couple of my new cars in the past.

Ha! Okay you guys had me laughing with your guesses. Actually if you open your doors and look at the bottom edge of the door on the inside you'll see little oval holes. Those are drains. There's no way to keep water from getting in your doors so they have to be able to drain. I'm betting the marks down the side of your cars are in line with those holes. After I wash my car I always wipe the door jams and the inside of the door edge. That'll keep those marks off your car.

I've had a e39 540, e46 325, e39 m5, e53 x5, e90 335d, e60 m5, f10 m5 and the only car that these annoying streaks appear on is the f15 x5.
There has to be something they can do about it if enough of us raise the stink. If you don't wipe the streaks right away it becomes like a water spot in the paint and that is not pretty on a dark colored car.
