Run Flat Tires + Spare Tire
I am planning to order the 451 wheels with the performance RFT. All season tires would be my preference but as you know they are unavailable. So I am planning to order the Space Saving Spare so that when I replace the RFT (after they wear out) with all-season tires I will have a spare tire.
Does that make sense? Are there other options (without buying another set of wheels) that makes sense? As always, any input is appreciated! |

My biggest concern is weather related. While I have a 4X4 truck for really bad weather it is nice to have all-season tires on the X5 when needed.

They cost close to 2K a set and are very soft, so you'll only get 15-20K miles out of it. They are useless in the winter. And they are a lot harder in the sidewalls than regular tires, although, I do agree with you, the ride is pretty good with the stock tires. I expect it will be better with non-RFT.

It make sense to get the spare. It's only $150 and it keeps your options open. You can alway take it out and save the space and weight. Lots of different situations and lots of opinions on tires. I personally have no use for all season tires. They are poor tires in good weather, and they are poor tires in winter weather. I will be getting a set of summer performance tires and a set of winter snow and ice. Whatever specific tires I decide on, run flat or not, I will get the space saver spare, just so I have it, so I will have every option open for the tires I decide on.

We sometimes get cold (1 C), rainy weather here and I understand that the performance tires are not good for that type of weather. Maybe after I have some experience with them I'll find that all-season tires are not necessary. So maybe the $150 for a spare tire can be viewed as an insurance policy of sorts!

How do the 20" performance RFT handle rain? Do they tend to hydroplane more quickly than an all season tire?
Also what brand of tire is the 20" RF! Last edited by HansRobert; 07-30-2014 at 03:58 PM.. |

They are decent in the rain. Not nearly as good as the PZero Nero's that came on my Jaguar, but, not as bad as you might think from looking at them (they are near slick, very little tread and very wide. However, my truck is brand new (1000 miles or so), I expect they will degrade for "OK" to "bad" pretty quickly. The tires are really wide on that setup, you need deep channels to move water away to have good hydroplane resistance. |
