BMW X5 2018 (xDrive 35i): Considering switching to 19” wheels from staggered 20”

Hello,

I’m considering to switch from 20” staggered configuration wheels to 19” wheels. Need advice as I’m a newbie to this. I previously tried this project and purchased 19” wheels for my 2018 BMW X5 from AutoRim. At the time of installation; I was told the offset size doesn’t match thus I had to return. 20” staggered Pirellis are threading out fast. This time I would prefer moving doing to 19” and install Michelin Defender LTX tires forthe size 255/50 R19. I’d appreciate any inputs.. Is it okay to buy aftermarket wheels (any recommendation?) or stick to OEM?

Thanks!

SK

Nothing wrong with aftermarket as long as you buy a set with the proper bolt pattern, offsets, etc. I'd personally just stick with OEM, & OEM 19's are pretty cheap to buy too, search for a set in the classifieds.

What is the reasoning for going to 19?
If you want smoother ride and better tire wear, get all season non runflats like continental dws06.
I haven't seen a decent 19 wheel out there. Best bet is to buy some factory takeoffs. Look on ebay, marketplace, etc.

Yeah just solve the issue with some barely used OE wheels that will be extremely reasonable. Rotate the tires every 10k and get 50k+ miles out of a set.

You can sell your other wheels for more than you’ll buy the 19s for!

I am getting ready to sell my 19s (449 rim) that I just took off with low mileage on Conti DWS06+ tires when I finish converting to black 20s (469m). In FL if interested and will post in classifieds or you can pm me.

Nothing wrong going aftermarket. I have OZ brand rims for my winter setup.

19 inch 467 on Pirelli run flats with MPBK. I use it as an SAV so prefer the square set up. We do ski trips in winter and beach in the summer. Tried DWS06+, but too floaty IMHO.

Came with 20 inch - 469s. But I wanted square set up.

The 20 inch were too harsh for me. The 19 inch are also better in the snow. JMHO. I even have the MPBK with 19 inch.
What tires did you have on your 20s?
I've had the 19 runflats on my previous x5, and I'd say the 20s with dws06 ride almost as smooth.

I had Pirelli runs flats on the 20s, which I switched to DWS 06 on the 20s as well. I agree, almost as smooth, but I still prefer the 19s with run flats. It’s like the suspension of the X5 was tuned for the 19s with run flats. Mine is a 50i, so it might be different if you have a 35i.

Originally, I was only planning to keep the 19s just for winter - since we go skiing a lot. But I kept it on permanently after preferring the ride. Also the larger MPBK was probably the best upgrade I made. Makes a very big difference in braking.
