New Hitch Options?
Any movement in the availability of a hitch for the X5M? I want to add one to the stable but the lack of hitch options for a bike hitch are preventing me. Currently have an X3 MSport and the hitch is used for skis and bikes which I do not want to put on the roof. I believe all the competitors offer hitch options for their cars (MB, Porsche, RR).

Europe for some reason gets an automatic tow hitch option, but we do not. Although my dealer said they could install something locally if I wanted...

Guys thanks but if I recall this was a ball hitch without the option for receiving a post (preferably 2"). The OEM European hitch is for towing not for mounting a bike or ski rack in the back or a cargo carrier.

I would love to see a 2" receiver hitch option that can hide away for a bicycle rack that I have.

Try execuhitch.com
They made a hidden hitch for the E70 X5 and its M version. I contacted them not too long ago, and they've developed a similar option for the F15/F85. |

I just ordered from Execuhitch (InvisiHitch) for my F85 and it ships to me tomorrow and should have it by the end of next week. Took them a while to develop one but it's now available.
Now I just need to find an installer for it. http://www.invisihitch.com/ shows how it will look ... well, you really can't see it if you don't have the "receiver" attached; which is what is important for aesthetics. There is a typo of the listing of hitches page saying for F85/F86 that is 2016-current but as we all know the 2015's and 2016's are the same and I've confirmed via email it's a typo on their site. http://execuhitch.com/tow-hitches/ is who you order it from but they don't have it listed on this site yet for the F85/F86 |

Invisihitch X5M (F85)
I finally received and had installed my Invisihitch Hitch Beam; which replaces the factory bumper beam. The Hitch Beam has a towing capacity of 7,700 lbs.
The delivered package includes illustrated step by step installation instructions. I ordered both the Ball mount and 2" Receiver for a bike rack carrier; which will be my primary use. Also I ordered the OEM wiring harness. There are ZERO bumper cuts and once properly installed one would never know you have a Hitch Beam when the Ball Mount or Receiver units are not attached. This post would be useless without some pictures so here they are: Taken just after deliver in May 2015 Back home after installation without Ball Mount or Receiver units attached. As you can see you can't tell that there is a "Tow Bar" installed. With 2" Receiver unit attached With Yakima bike carrier attached - folded up With bike loaded and locked in place on carrier. These pictures were taken at night after getting home and installed the bike rack. I will be using this over the weekend and will be sure to take more pictures and post them. The Receiver Unit attaches and detaches with ease. |

This is for general knowledge, I have the electric retractable one, it works nicely but you should never exceed the tongue weight, this hitch will get stuck easily on its locked position, I guess there are secure pins inside the system which bends slightly under too much weight, also and this is interesting, the retractable one is for European market which use metric system so the ball that comes with it is a 50mm diameter not a 2 inches, the difference is very small and you can safely use a 2 inch socket on 50 mm ball but it is good to know this condition.

hitch for a bike rack only
I just need a standard hitch for the back. I will only ever use it for my bike rack so I don't need all the electrical or anything that will tow more than 100 pounds.

Why doesn't the US get this option? All F85's and F86's that go to Europe (maybe everywhere in the world) are produced in the US...

Wasn't cheap (just over ~$2k, which included all the wiring and reprogramming the backup cameras etc.), but I just bought a used 2016 X6m and had them install this one before I took delivery:
https://www.shopbmwusa.com/PRODUCT/4...-RECEIVER-TUBE Works great and the receiver comes off easily to make it completely disappear. And if for some reason you decide you want to tow heavy stuff you can but the Class 3 adapter for a couple hundred bucks and clip it right on to the quick release base. I'm planning to just keep the receiver with my bike rack and put them both on when needed (will add less than 10 seconds to my normal bike rack install). |
