I can personally vouch for Route66 based on my experience, but they don't cover X5s anymore (with good reason, I suppose). None of the 3rd party warranties cover emissions, only BMW plans do.
Where would you think the 40e fits in your view?

The 4 cylinder N55 apparently is one of the most reliable. Only concern I have of course is the hybrid drivetrain.

What's the battery warranty? Most hybrids have a separate battery warranty for about 7 years.

Other issues unique to this 40e would be everything related to the electrical drivetrain. Ultimately, current 40e buyers are in the frontier of identifying issues.

8Yrs for the battery.

The Electrical drivetrain is where I am most concerned with, at least on all the electronic computer modules. I guess I'll see how it goes here on out until the factory warranty expires. So far, the couple issues i have had were resolved by software updates.

i have to say though...traditionally, what I've seen as the owner of the E70 X5, when there's an issue endemic across the entire range (e.g. on the E70, diesel emissions equipment, driveshaft, etc), they tend to issue an extended warranty for the part at 10 years 100k miles.

I wouldn't hang my hat on past experiences, but a failure in electrical modules effecting the hybrid drivetrain is a pretty big deal that can be endemic to every 40e manufactured. It can even effect safety, which would require an official recall and reporting to the government regulator.

So I wouldn't worry about it at all at this point, especially in year 1 of the model range and ownership. I would worry about this if you were buying this in year 6 and beyond, but by then, hopefully major issues would be hammered out or at least identified.

I think that 8-year warranty is for battery life and its ability to keep a charge. Btw, what software updates has been needed on the 40e? I'm only aware of the level 2 home charging issue. (I have a vested interested, b/c I think I'm replacing my X5d with a 40e)

Thx appreciate that! Will wait until we get closer to warranty expiration and revisit then if the extended warranty is worthwhile.

The updates so far were with the level 2 charger issue (as described on my other thread), and I believe the other one in the first few months we had the car back in Sep 2016 - not sure what that update was for.

Major Engine work at 44k miles under warranty and I will re up with Platinum

My 50i has been down for 10 days after losing valve stem seals. It will get new seals, fuel injectors, upper oil pan gasket and a ac condenser. I'm betting that all that work would be more than the premium for a platinum extended warranty

While I'm on the fence about a maintenance contract I'm definitely going to get the warranty

regarding the extended warranty...when I bought my CPO elite luxury line, the dealer offered a 7yr/100K warranty for $3200. It was not a "BMW" warranty, but a dealer sold third party one. Didn't realize that at the time of purchase. I haven't had to use it since I'm still under the CPO warranty though. But it turns out that USAA also has an extended warranty plan for the x5...which come out to around $2800 for 7yr/100k. It is through USAA, which I have used for 25+ yrs, and I generally trust their products. You can roll this price into a loan, or pay it monthly. Just another option which seems to be a bit cheaper than the BMW plan, which may be third party anyway.

There are 3 levels of Extended Service Contracts(ESC).
Powertrain Plus(ESC PT+)
Gold(ESC GD)
Platinum (ESC PL)
Pricing is based on the months and miles of coverage required. Coverage is extended by counting from the original in-service date. Maximum is 84 months and 100,000 miles(84M/100K Mls).

I was quoted $4820 for the Platinum 72M/100K ESC. I was told you can put 10% down and make monthly payments for 12 months.
Did you buy in the end? Can you please share your dealer contact? I'm looking for a warranty as well.

I just purchased an x5 xDrive 50i F15. I was quoted $5600 for 7yr/unlimited mileage for extended platinum coverage. I declined because I’m CPO for 5 yr/unlimited, but I plan to re-evaluate closer to CPO warranty expiration. I did purchase the Ultimatecare +3 (7yr/125k) for $3300. I think that’s a no brainer for the two brake jobs, 2 sets of plugs, etc.

My local BMW dealer is telling me that all extended warranties are sold at the same MSRP. Is there truth to that?

I'm pricing them right now but this would be a change if so. Haven't found much by way of other quotes.

I have 2014 x5 5.0 and the warranty expires in 4 mo/3500 mi. My car went into the shop today for a “drivetrain failure” over the weekend (had to have it towed 185 mi).

While I was in the shop getting my loaner, I inquired about purchasing the extended coverage. I was quoted approx $7300 for the plat and $6400 for the gold. Anybody have any thoughts. It seems the some of the previous quotes I have seen on here are considerably lower.

FYI I am in SoCal, it seem price varies dealer to dealer.

Is everyone getting both E.M an E.W? My warranty and maintenance are both expiring in a month and thinking about the warranty but not the maintenance.

My 2016 x5 50i is at 49990 Miles, owing 38k to the bank . KBB was under 40k. Was on the fence to exchange for a newer vehicle but the lease rate did not make sense. As I do close to 22K per year decided to keep this for another 50k. Got the platinum warranty 5/100k for 4300. The drivetrain or transmission itself is 3-4K job here at a local DIY in San Antonio. So this made sense with peace of mind.

On my 2018 X5 50i, I decided to get the 7-year unlimited miles Platinum warranty from BMW for $3,900. Peace of mind even if I end up losing money. I plan to keep it for 7 years + as long as it is not viable to fix anymore. It's fully loaded with the exception of the 3rd-row seat - which I don't need.

I am new to the forum and this topic is top of mind for me. I am picking up a 2018 x5 with 9 months left of original warranty followed by the CPO at the end of the new car term.

From what I am reading, it *seems* that the concensus of the board is that the extended warrenty may not be necessary? I expect to put 30-36k mi's per year on the car (may be on the high side- but I'd prefer to go high).

I am financing the car via BMW fin svc's. Does anyone see an advantage to purchasing anything extended when I pick up the car? I am sure the finance guy/girl will do their thing....

I bought the extra warranty 7 years/200km and have not used it. Consider it insurance if it makes you comfortable but you're better off saving the money for when you need it.

I also bought the maintenance and came out almost even. The brakes are expensive and they wouldn't change it until the computer told them to, which was one month before the expiration date.
