Be honest to you, I don't know how much "pollution" this feature can really reduce.

When having my '15 X5, I hardly turn it off. I got used to it but I have to agree that I sometimes did hate its hesitation when the power was needed.

In NYC traffic, I may drive one block then stop/idle for a minute or longer. In this situation, the pollution I generated in those minutes (when the engine is idle) would probably be more than in the moments the car starts.

For the most part I turn it off it increases wear on starter and engine component, however I do use it if there’s a train crossing or in a long drive thru que or if I have to wait more the 5 mins.

Off since I bought the car and it stays off, and I'm so thankful we have the option to do this.

One time pulling up to a light I realize I must have pushed the AS/S button and ignition together with my thumb by mistake, engine died (auto stop) and scared the hell out of me.

You guys convinced me to turn it off. I never really liked it anyways.

IMO the worst thing about this feature is the location - on my 15 I can't see the button to disable. I generally like the feature but it's annoying that it turns off within a second of stopping - I'd prefer it activate (turn engine off) after a full 3 second stop.

Yes, I find the location of the button extremely annoying. I wasn't sure if this was just an issue with RHD cars, but perhaps not. In fact I think it's almost unsafe trying to find it while driving.
I think eventually the system needs to be able to distinguish between different traffic situations, and probably work in conjunction with external cameras and GPS information. However if we're all driving electric cars in the future it's probably irrelevant anyway.

Yes:
I found it neat at heavy traffic intersection or with long red light.
And also No:
I was in a treat for an element of surprise when trying to turn left at an intersection. I have a habit of turning the wheel and releasing the brake at the same time. And with Auto Start/Stop totally disabling power steering, plus turbo lag, timing is basically messed up. I also found shifting the gear to left for Sport to temporarily disable Auto Start/Stop does the trick for me.

Terrible for the battery. At least in the 50i. Don't use it. You're not gonna save anything meaningful when it comes to gas. Would be better if BMW already didn't design the alternator to disengage while driving. So couple that with the constant load of starting the engine it eats it. Several threads on this already. If you want to use it then recommend getting a trickle charger and plug in once a week or so.

It does. You have to turn it on. It defaults to on (unless coded off) in Eco pro mode. And I don't believe it works at all in sport or sport+

One of BMW's more useless features. Annoying to have to look around the wheel to see if its on again.

And . . . the light is opposite of the way it should be IMO. It should be lit orange when its "on" and the light should be off when auto start is not being used. But who am I to diss German engineering

While I'm on the subject of annoying interior lights how often do you look at your drivers arm rest and see the child lock window switch is lit orange (I have no children). I always seem to hit it on in the dark when I'm sliding my hand to the window switches. It should be a slide type switch (not a push button) like the mirror switch when switching to the left or right mirrors to adjust them.

I turned mine off. While I do love the rumble of a diesel engine coming to life, it is not something I want to experience 50 times while sitting in stop and go traffic.

Saw this post only today, since it is early April21 I assumed a joke.
Otherwise he should enlighten us how Start/Stop has been disabled in a car (I.e. X5 40e) which is quite different in Start/Stop system. LOL

I use mine all the time here in Sarasota, FL.
Lights in FL are long!
A friend I know tried blaming it for lunging forward and hitting the car in front.
Of course she was plastered so it didn’t fly.
