absolutely. I listen to the highest quality music, with great dynamic range sometimes, and the absolute silence of the system without ASD is impressive. It's just hard to imagine how ASD couldn't hurt any music output on any system. Yes, if you like the ASD sound I say go for it, and if you're listening to certain types of music (metal, louder stuff, etc.) it might be great for you. But I'm currently really enjoying the unadulterated sound without ASD. I'm listening to 1 sound source instead of 2, and that's basically always how I listen to music.

I need to dig around some of the other forums and see what folks know (M3 gets a lot more traffic - maybe there's something there). But otherwise, it's just a lot of guessing. And I also had a really hard time perceiving it when it was on. I just know now that my system sounds much better with some music cranked up loud.

Easy to unplug it to ensure it is off forever.
To me, it sounded like it came primarily from the rear speakers. Possibly a little from the front. Especially on decel. Sounded like a kid in the back seat making budddin buddin sounds. Lol. |

Do you guys know if you unplug it if it will show up during service? I saw over in the M3 forum someone was selling some sort of replacement switch that would disable ASD, but still allow the system to show as functional. I just don't want the service dudes to rehook it up every time I go in...

I had my car in recently to ask about the whirring sound I've reported previously.
They came back to advise me its ASD. I told them it can't be and they insisted. Well, they insisted until I took them around the back of the car and showed them it was unplugged. They won't be plugging it back in at each service - they won't even know. |

Thanks OP for the DIY, 60 seconds is exactly how long it took.
I, for one, never had a problem with the ASD on. It didn't sound unnatural, fake or too loud to me. I just wanted to remove it to see if I preferred it without ASD. So after unplugging it, I could immediately notice the cabin was more quiet and I could hear the engine more than before. Like others have said, it's just less of the same sound and also it felt less 'droney'. As for the HK sound system, I thought it was noticeably sharper and clearer with ASD off. I was actually very impressed by the sound system and I am not regretting not getting a car with B&O. However, after driving hard in M2 mode, I feel it lost some of that visceral experience and excitement without the louder exhaust sound. Especially since I came from an E92 M3 with Eisenmann Race exhaust + Cat Delete. So..I'm going to plug the ASD back on and take the degraded sound system over the lower exhaust sound, and maybe only unplug it to rest my ears on a long road trip.

pulled the plug today. MUCH BETTER.
ASD is an aberration. The worse of it is that in certain revs, the harmonics clash with the natural sound, creating a rather unpleasant result. it should be a simple option in the settings to turn it on or off. Mine will remain disconnected. |

There was a thread on the 2 series forum where someone figured out a way through coding to change what "soundtrack" ASD played. He was able to make his 2 series sound like the F8X M3/4 or M5 which was pretty cool. Has anyone figured out a way to do this on the X5M yet?

Does removing the cable affect anything done at the dealer? Would it prevent them from installing updates, etc? Just removed it because it was so annoying but worried it might affect updates that the dealer would do.

Wow! Just unplug mine It is night and day in sound quality with BO system. Thanks for starting this Thread. BMW should not charge for a great system and mess it up with ASD. I will never rehook ASD back after hearing my BO clear sound.

Glad you're enjoying it. I just got into listening to lossless music (FLAC), and it really sounds awesome on the B&O. That was one of the main reasons I wanted to disable ASD. Without it, lossless sounds fantastic. If I was just listening to bluetoothed podcasts or lossy mp3s I might not care, but much happier this way. I had it coded off but I'm going to dig around and unplug the bastard too.

On X6M looks a little different. Is the small box on top of amp the ASD unit I have to disconnect? My fat fingers can't reach the connector

I unplugged my '16 X5M and noticed a whir sound on occasion. I then plugged it back in, pulled the fuse and haven't heard it since. I don't know if any people have found that simply unplugging the fuse has a negative, but so far, so good.

I would also suggest the CARLY for BMW works too about $100 and you can code the car (few options). I am not a fan of unplugging stuff but just MO.

I pulled my fuse MONTHS ago and have not had any issues at all. From what I've read that fuse is only for the ASD.

Just an FYI i have mine unplugged and when i brought my car to BMW for service my friend who worked on my car said he could see in the system that there was an error for my ASD. Didn't cause any issues but just wanted to point it out.
With my stock exhaust the ASD didn't bother me but once i installed my Eisenmann Race you HAVE to disable it or you'll get two different exhaust tones inside the car which makes it impossible to carry a conversation. Alan
