Oh Deer...

Found out last night the fenders on these X5s are plastic!

Wow. Good that everyone is ok, except deer. IMHO plastic fenders are better: less weight and no corrosion (which is imho an issue in NY and Canada due to salty road conditions)

I manage a fleet of 125 company vehicles, we average 8-10 deer hits a year. I tell all of our employees, lift off the gas, keep the wheel straight and take the deer straight on. Do not try to miss the deer. Insurance will fix the vehicle. I'm in an X6, glad yours held up well. Deer, coons, turkeys, possums, all of them are a problem in Wisconsin.

I saw lots of signs, and people told me the same thing when driving from Green Bay to Milwaukee in the winter a long time ago... Most likely drivers probably may swirl when seeing such big object in front of the vehicle...

Hope Jlu88 and others are all okay, and the car ca ben repaired soon.

Sorry man, not sure where you are from but dead deer are all over the side of the road In Wisconsin this time of year. I worry about the people in the car not the deer. Hunting season will come soon, that will take about 400,000 out of the herd. That life in Wisconsin.

What did you think they were made of? Every manufacturer uses plastic for front and rear bumpers. Cheap to replace and easy to mass produce.

Thanks everyone, luckily it was a small dear and the impact itself wasn't too bad, I've felt speed bumps more violent than this lol

That's something that I didn't option, I don't think it would've helped much anyway.

Ouch, seem hitting a deer is pretty high.

Plastic front and rear bumpers I'm aware of, but it's the first time I've had a car with plastic fenders, thought it was aluminum.

Glad you and your family were not injured and did not injure other motorists with any evasive maneuvers. I assumed the fenders were metal, do you have a photo of the plastic fender?

I do this drive many times per year to see clients. I live north of Green Bay... it's not uncommon to actually see deer strikes happen. They're frequent enough that I just saw one this weekend. I absolutely can't wait for deer season (the hunt). reducing the herd is good for all drivers.

Glad the OP is OK. Your X appears to have served you well.

I swerved slightly otherwise it would've been a full head on impact and may have deployed the airbags, luckily no one was passing me, now that would've been a huge mess!

This is the only picture of the fender, only knew it was plastic because of that split.

Sorry to see this kind of damage.

Hit a dear head one in my E70 many years ago. Wasn't pretty.

make sure to put a crashed deer out of it's misery. don't let animals suffer a slow agonizing death just because we want to drive. respect nature. don't be selfish.
