Does iphone x still need a case for the wireless charging to work or is it plug and play?

Both the iPhone 8 and iPhone X have a glass back that allows for the wireless charging. No need for a case.

I have the iPhone 7 with metal back, and it requires a special case that has a wireless charging feature embedded into the case. This case has a flexible plug that goes into the iPhone 7 like your normal cord plugs into the iPhone. This specifically designed flexible plug goes to the inductive charging pad that is embedded in the case. So the wireless charging goes from the center console charging pad to the phone case, wirelessly, then the energy passes through the wire into the plug at the bottom of the iPhone.

I always have a leather sleeve around my iPhone 7, and only put it in the wireless case when driving a while. iPhone 8, iPhone 8S, and iPhone X users will have to have no case at all, or have a sleeve like me that is easily removable, or may have to remove any protective case they buy if they want to use the wireless charging. Perhaps there will be cases that are compatible with wireless charging. But the phone has to line up a certain way, and adding a case to iPhone 8 or iPhone X might slow down the charging, or disrupt it altogether.

Thanks. I am using iphone 6s and am getting iphone x in a couple of weeks and will try it out. I use waze a lot when I drive so won't be able to use wireless charging much but it's a nice feature to have, may be for the second phone.

Wireless charging still works with most cases on as long as they are not metal. I have my iPhone X in the Apple leather case and the wireless charging works as advertised.

Yep. My iPhone X charges effortlessly in a rubber clear case in my X5M.

Works great for a second iPhone. Completely understand about using Waze. Too bad it is not compatible with Apple CarPlay or iDrive. I am waiting for the day that someone finally makes a real time navigational system and graphical interface so well that it becomes the industry’s standard. I think Apple thought they would do this with CarPlay, but nope.

My US Spec X5 M has Apple CarPlay compatibility, and I think we all have Real Time Traffic Information, but since the embedded SIM card is AT&T, none of these features work on my X5 M until I get it back to the US.

I really don't like Apple Carplay. I opted out of it in my X6M and just picked up a new Honda Civic with it for my wife. I find it to be very intrusive and limiting. Feels just like with iwatch - it has the potential to be a much better app/device but it's not there yet.

CarPlay is actually better on my wife's 2018 Odyssey Elite than my X5M. Likely because the cartoon-ish feel of CarPlay fits with the lower-definition of the Honda entertainment system.

The quality of the monitor and Connected Drive is significantly higher and it makes CarPlay look like, well, childs play.

It came on my 2017 when I got it, but I really only got the 2017 because it had updated iDrive and newer hardware and would future-proof me a little longer.

Lol I love how no one is addressing the OP question as he does not have wireless charging and was asking if it can be integrated.

I’ve got a wireless charging pad in the house for my iPhone x and it’s works well with a rubber sleeve on the phone. I’m looking to get something similar for the car (when it arrives) and was thinking that a decent magnetic pad stored in the armrest will be an ideal solution. Currently trawling through eBay and Amazon looking for a decent solution. Has anyone conquered this yet? Cheers.

@rasbeam the wireless charging cradle is part number 84108781452. I doubt that coding is required for this part. Not sure what else is required for a retro fit, hopefully there is a power connection. Each BMW vehicle wiring harness is 'custom' built based on the options. Vendor for Plant Spartanburg is Dräxlmaier, https://www.draexlmaier.com/en/produ...ing-harnesses/

I have posted this question in the F80 forums how to change the embedded eSIM chip carrier. Is the German market locked to a specific carrier who supplies the data for hotspot, or can customers choice the carrier? Wondering if US spec vehicles have a locked eSIM to only AT&T. As I would like to change to T-Mobile.

I have a 2017 X5M and an iPhone X. The wireless charger works, but it seems like it's about 1/3 as fast as lugging it in.

What is the wattage of the BMW wireless charger, 5, 7.5 or greater? iOS 11.2 allows fast charging up to 7.5 watts.

All I know is that the dealership told me is the US Spec X5 M has an AT&T SIM built in at the factory. It sounds like it is not able to be switched out, or more accurately, it is probably not easy, if possible at all. They literally told me all I could do is wait to get back to the US. Sorry I am not any help on this.

Wireless charging is inherently caveman slow. Gotta wonder why all plug in charging is referenced in amps (1, 2.1, etc) then it switches to watts for wireless well some simple calculations show that even at 7.5watts this equates to even less than the small 2.1amp apple charging block but faster than small 1amp that came with your phone. Wireless is not a "my phone is about to die so let me charge it" kind of thing. More of a convenience to just put it down and be available to quickly pick up.

Power = Current x Voltage
Watts = Amps x Voltage
7.5w = A x 5v (typical charge brick Voltage)
Amps = 1.5

The 5w standard is equivalent to 1A charge and the 7.5w equal to 1.5A.

Aka faster if you use iPad brick or 3rd party 2.1a charger. I'm not sure what BMW plug in defaults too in center console. I think it's 2.1 or something similar.
