It's 1090 feet elevation (Phoneix, AZ). The thing is driving like this was very boring, I constantly was holding myself to not press gas pedal. I'll post later same route, but with my usual driving style - more aggressive and during rush hour - numbers will go down

Not sure what eco mode is like on the 50i, but eco mode on the 35i is painfully slow to react even with the MPPK lol

The same here .

Keep in mind the average price of DEF is $2.80/gallon in the US so it does need to be factored in at some point once it is not covered by the vehicle maintenance plan. Additionally oil changes in diesels are more costly as well. Things to consider with diesel.
How much DEF do you think the 35d's use? Its somewhere in the range of 1 gallon per 3000-4000 miles. Using your $2.8/g pricing, that equates to something like 30 cents per tank of fuel. If you drive 15,000 miles per year, DEF will cost you a whole $12....in a year. Thats pretty negligible.

In New Jersey you can't pump you own gas so refueling often takes a long time. I heard a rumor you can pump your own diesel, though. Is this true?

WHAT?! You cannot pump your own gas in NJ? This is awesome, and yet awful at the same time!

Do they tack on a surcharge to every fill up? Do most stations do a good job? Tighten the lid until it clicks, make sure they don't let fuel run all over the paint, not bang up the car & paint with the metal nozzle while being in a hurry?!?!

I have never heard of this. NJ...that's a whole lotta crazy

It's actually quite miserable. You have to time your fillups precisely before your car wash because there is a 0.0% chance of them not getting gas on your car.

Yet it is typically less expensive than across the river in PA. Love my diesel for about 10-15% less. Yes, they pump that too by law.

I guess different strokes... It’s nice to not have to pump your own gas on the cold days but 80% of the time it’s a huge time waste waiting to be blessed by the gas pumping gods. It’s hilarious when i go out Of state and forget to get out and pump my own gas. Disappointed to hear it’s the same for diesel abut I am looking forward to less trips to the pump.

Just out of curiosity and for fun tried driving very calmly in city during midnight, empty streets, some street lights - total 14 min of driving and 8 miles - resulted in 26.1 mpg

Question to diesel and 35i guys - how much will you get in similar slow meditating driving in city (no highway)? Just trying to gauge how much more mpg 35d and 35i can deliver in similar driving

https://streamable.com/z5j5f (very boring, basically just skip to end to see final mpg)

My perspective on the diesel. Power wise, diesel more torque, less throttle response, less HP. Jumps into holes in traffic with ease, just doesn't have the sustained push higher HP gives. When driving the X5 I do not feel short changed on power; the power delivery suits the car well. Key for me is just how long you can go between fill ups. I have never done the math on fuel savings, DEF cost, whatever, just don't really care. Around town driving, short distances, stop and go, idling lots and still get 450+ miles out of a tank. X5 packed up and ready to roll on a trip, tank 1/3 full. No worries, on the highway that means fuel stop is 200 miles and 3 hrs down the road.

Wow, more than I expected on a 50i. Your average speed is pretty high though, I could never achieve that in NYC. I usually average 12-13mpg at around 12-15mph on my 35i. Even with no traffic, I don't see more than 16mpg.

This is exactly how I feel about my 35d. It's a torque monster, but for sure NO hp monster But, driving daily, getting 500+ miles out of ever tank and only filling up 1-2x a month is amazing!!!!

My last car before the 35d was a 40e X5 (6 months only), but before that was a G550, Supercharged Rover and a handful of Rolls Royce and Bentleys! Of course a blast, but it was 1-2x a week filling up. Such a time suck and I just hate filling up. We all have things that annoy us

Correction: 35d has less torque. 35d has 413 lb-ft while 50i has 479 lb-ft - both at the crank (I have around 540 lb-ft at the wheel which is about 675 lb-ft at the crank, but I'm tuned). Unless you were speaking about 35i - then yes, but note the thread name (50i vs 35d)

Certainly at peak the V8 has more. The N57 diesel hits peak by what, 1200 rpm? That is what makes the 35d snap to when you get on it.

Technically 35d has max torque starting at 1500rpm (max torque 1500-2500/3000) while 50i has max torque starting at 2000rpm (max torque 2000-4500). However, at 1500rpm 50i already has same torque value as 35d and after that it only increases. So at 1500rpm they both have same torque, for 35d that will be max torque, but for 50i torque will continue to grow up to 2000rpm where it will reach it's max

Sorry for my stubbornness, I completely agree with you that all things considered 35d is a fantastic engine! IMHO it's a best thing that BMW did so far and I wish it will keep diesel engines for US/Canada lineup in the future

P.S. BMW announced a new 3 cyl. diesel turbo engines that have around 47-50 MPG in a new X1 - I wonder if they will bring it to US/Canada?
