Auto Start/Stop

Just curious how many people here use it. Any concerns with the starter wearing prematurely?

I turned mine off the second I took delivery of my new '17 35d. I was SO happy I could disable it...on my '17 X5 40e, the damn thing was always on!

I do not understand how this really helps. Each time the car starts, it put outs more pollutants and it is not good for the starter and battery!

I personally DESPISE this feature. I am concerned about starter wear, for sure, but also vehicle response in an emergency situation. Off 100% of the time for me.

Sometimes I use it at the drive thru. Makes it easier to communicate with the speaker box

Never heard of starter wear issues and its been around for quite a while now. I did code it to remember last setting, so its basically off and stays off.

Thankful that BMW still allows it to be turned off permanently. Audi and others make you turn it off with each start. I find it to be a stupid and dangerous feature. In my Audi I had a couple of times where I needed to accelerate quick through an intersection from a stop. Just that second of refining the engine really messed with my timing.

I have used it on every BMW it came standard from factory. It has never bothered me nor caused any long-term issues. With each newer ride, it gets better and better.

I think majority switches it off. It's a good option for stop and go traffic and for long stop lights to not waste fuel, BUT it's executed poorly (there's too much lag and vibration/shaking when starting) - hence people turn it off

As for starter - it will be fine, starter on x5 was designed to withstand a LOT more start cycles than your regular starter - it was changed to heavy duty starter specifically due to that added option start/stop in f15 generation, so it's going to be just fine

You think that is why replacement battery policy was changed?

Xdrive40e is is really subtle and automatically gets disabled if driving in Sport. The new G-series vehicles additionally take into account traffic conditions with regards to ASS.

On the contrary, I think BMW has executed the feature quite well. Go drive vehicles from other manufacturers and you'll see how rough and unrefined the start/stop can be. Recent drives in GM and Volvo vehicles were miserable with far worse lag and vibration. I find it to be seamless and almost unnoticeable in my 50i, and I've had passengers not even know it happened. However, like most people here, I rarely use it.

Yes, but not only because of that. In f15 alternator can disengage during engine load (like acceleration etc) and battery gets depleted faster

I think the same, that F15’s is better than many of other brands’. But, I feel Porsche’s, which is responding quicker with less noise/vibration, even working better than F15’s.

With 40e, isn’t it supposed to work differently? As Hybrid (Plug-in), the engine Start/Stop has been optimized by the balance of the battery/engine like many other Hybrid vehicles. Its Start/Stop isn’t completely the same as other F15’s - maybe the hardware is the same.

With 40e, when using electric, rpm's do not move. It is really smooth, subtle transition between stop and start.
