Weight of 19" OEM rims and runflat tires vs 20" spin forged rims and non RF tires.
Food for thought when it comes to buying new wheels and tires.
Before I had my new wheels mounted and installed by the dealership. I weighed the rims and the tires separate. The Avant Garde M615 spin forged (A.R.T.) rims weighs just over 24 lbs for the fronts (20x10), and just over 26 lbs for the rears (20x11). (The A.R.T. or Advanced Rim Technology, claims up to 25% lighter rims, without sacrificing strength.) I guess I will know by fall, if they hold up long term. Thank you Ben (r33_RGSport) for getting them for me!! The Michelin Pilot Sport tires weighs just under 31.5 lbs for the fronts (275/40-20), and just under 33.5 lbs for the rears (315/35-20) Add TPMS sensors plus balance weights and lets say 56 lbs per front wheel and 60 lbs per rear wheel. Didn't think much about it until today when I finally weighed the OEM 19" wheels with the used OEM RF tires on them. (which will be for sale soon, anyone needing winter wheels?) The square 19" OEM set up, came in at just above 71 lbs per wheel! Tires are 255/50/19 According to online data, the style 450 wheels weighs just over 35 lbs each, so that leaves the OEM RF tires weighing about the same. With the new wheels, I now have up front 15 lbs (21%) less unsprung weight per side. For the rear I have 11 lbs (15%) less unsprung weight per side. This despite the wheels and tires being wider. I can definitely feel the difference when driving. Stomp on it and she takes off just a bit quicker. |

I have a set of 19 inch BMW winters with runflats for my old E70. These are ridiculously heavy compared the new winter setup I have for my F85 which are 551 style 20 inch with Yokohama non-runflat staggered setup.
The weight is in the runflat tyre which makes sense given the reinforcing that has to be done to make them a runflat. About 5-8kg difference per wheel. |

If you look at my numbers, the new non RF tires are only a couple lbs lighter per tire (up front 2.5lbs=1.1kg, and rear 3.5lbs=1.6kg), though also wider. So if it was the same size tire, the difference should be bigger, though I doubt more than 5lbs. The big savings in weight for me, is due to buying forged wheels, in this case spin forged. I'm saving 11lbs per wheel up front, and 9lbs per wheel at the rear, despite going 2" and 3" wider. I can definitely feel the difference when driving, and I really like it! I looked up the Style 551 wheels, and they are 36lbs (16.3kg) up front, and 38lbs(17.3kg) at the rear for each wheel. Nice looking wheels but still heavy. If you ever replace the wheels, try a set of forged wheels, you will notice the difference! |
