Engine Malfunction F15 50i

Okay, so I'm really pissed off about BMW and their N63 engine.

I used to own a '11 F10 50i. I sold it in January 2015 to a close friend of mine and replaced it with a brand new F15 50i. Two months later my friend had his N63 engine replaced, because it malfunctioned.

Now, a year and a half later the same thing happened to my F15. It currently has its engine replaced. It's only 18 months old and has just 24,000km on it (<15k miles). I have taken at least 5,000km to break in the engine. I have not driven the car in excessive RPM. The car has always stayed in my garage, which is cool in the summer and warm in the winter. I only fill in the most expensive fuel we have here.

So basically my doubt here is - should I change the engine for my next BMW? I love big V8's, but I cannot bare the fact that every couple of months I need to have my engine replaced. Or should I do like everybody else and buy an MB '63 instead?

Sincerely disappointed BMW fan.

Go for the MB. My collagues at work drive them and never have any trouble. Now that I have constant trouble with my '16 F15 diesel, they just keep saying "told you so".

I dont think I even bother try to fix mine anymore (still engine trouble), just getting rid of it when the leasing deal gets free after 12 months. Cant even imagine how this thing will work when it gets old for real.

I love BMWs for their reliability, I have owned an E93 for 7 years with no issues at all, the inline 6 was amazing and reliable.

I have 23000KM on my F15 now and no issues so far, except the seat bell at the back was replaced because occasionally it would get stuck.

I have a Volkswagen GTI and I have replaced ABS Module($3000), Intake Manifold and Cleaning ($1700), HID Control Module ($200 used), Fuel Injectors, now it seems like the common control module is dying, headlight randomly shuts off. With that said, I probably would not buy a VW or Audi again.

I think it is matter of luck, or maybe something with the V8s.

Honestly, I think it's luck. And the unfortunate inconsistency with QC. The combination of these two elements is something you see across other competitor brands as well.

I know a few who own different Land Rover cars. Some vow never to return to the brand due to the headache-inducing visits to the service center, while others have had no issues with their RRs. Another buddy with an A4 with no issues so far, another with an S3 where the dealership had to buy it back because it was a lemon.

What was wrong with the engine(s) that had to be replaced? Same issue or different?

I'm amazed you're even still considering BMW...

Garage List
Interesting that people who baby their motor seems to have all the problems while people like me who redline it don't seem to have as many problems.

I took my 04 X5 4.4 to 200K with no problems. My 14 F15 50i has 42K, again no problems. I have always had good luck with vehicles but it seems some people never do.

Mercedes have just as many problems with their large engines here.
Many V8 get replaced.
Just like BMW many more dont give any trouble.

Failure rates are about similar. Same as most other brands.

I was about to say the same lol
BMW's are meant to be driven hard!

OP if you do a search, you will find a lot of issues with the V8's particularly the N63 engines.

IMO BMW's inline six's are and always have been the companies bread and butter.. With that said, I would still lease V8's, but would never purchase them.

Welcome aboard, my X5 50i 15' engine got replaced as well in July.
Out of 5 Bmw's with V8 engine I used to own in the last 10 years that was the first to get replaced due to a malfunction, but I'm considering X5M as my next vehicle hopefully.

Well, I'm still waiting on my dealer to give me something written in order to be sure, but from what I understood from the phone calls, there was a problem with cylinder 8 which then resulted in a bearing failure followed by the whole engine block.

Intriguingly enough - the car didn't say anything. A nasty noise appeared, like rattling of a noisy diesel engine - and that's why I took it to the dealer - but the car never said anything. I didn't get the drivetrain malfunction note, like many other fellow forum members.
