Fake exhaust and 1 dirty tip

I know this is probably been addressed before but why would BMW ever make a fake exhaust tip we're no exhaust actually comes out from... now I have 1 black tip and 1 chrome one.

Any advice on how to clean them ?

You don't have a "fake exhaust", there is a valve that opens and closes at a certain RPM / throttle position. Definitely nothing new.

You can always upgrade your set up and get the valve to be open all the time.
There are many options to do that.
Most practical is a electronic override sold by a good reseller here.
There is always the option to upgrade to the square tips and rear valance that has a dummy electronic control you can plug the factory plug and there is no valve to open just open pipes with minimal sound change.

As Stewey said, the other exhaust opens up at higher RPM, I want to say either 3K or 4K+. Drive your 35i hard and you will see the other exhaust tip color up evenly..
Or just clean both tips with a good chrome polish.

If you want both exhaust to be working full time, you have two options.. the google, youtube, search here golf-tee mod or install MPE ( M Performance Exhaust ).

Lock the valve in the open state. "Fake" exhaust problem solved.

^^^ First thing I did on our E82, good ol' golf tee mod! As for my X5, the 35d is dual exit 100% of the time...

I did the same on my F31 and RS4 and X5M. Lock it open and it sounds better and wears evenly in regards to the carbon exhaust remnants on the tips.

But what is the best way to remove the soot build up without scratching the chrome exhaust tip before applying the chrome polish - or does the polish also serve to remove the build up of soot as well? Any suggested brands of chrome polish? I use Zaino Brothers wax (not sure if they make chrome polish) but it could not remove all of the soot build up on the chrome exhaust tip (or on the rear bumper surround either ).

I just use mothers chrome polish http://www.autogeek.net/motmagalpol.html and it removes all the black crap from the tips. For stuff that has been on for a while it may be more difficult and need more elbow grease. As far as scratches.. I'm pretty sure it will have small fine scratches since it is a polish.. it is hardly noticeable though. Another remedy is to paint your exhaust tips black

Or just paint the exhaust tips black.
I think that is a good option.

Or you could try clean the tips with an all purpose cleaner first. P2S1 makes an awesome metal polish soap as well.
