Exclamation BMW X5 F15 MY15 50i M SPORT DRIVETRAIN MALFUNCTION

Good day to all fellow members,

Few days ago while i was driving my vehicle on the highway cruising at around 100 Kph and accelerating moderately suddenly the engine started shaking excessively and the alarm popped up in idrive screen indicating subject error.
I parked the vehicle immediately on the side of the road and within no time BMW contacted me through the connected drive via the vehicle and send over the tow truck to tow the vehicle all the way to dealer.

Yesterday I'd received a phone call from the SA stating that the engine has to be replaced as per manufacturer recommendation and this process will take around two weeks due to the engine has to be shipped via air from europe all the way to kuwait.

I know thats so weired and as a matter of fact i might be the first person here in this great forum encountered this kind of an issue.

Appreciate any feedback, advise & recommendation towards this issue.

My vehicle only had 25k on odometer & the dealer gave me a brand new X4 as a loaner.

If you search this forum you might find a lot more similar issues with a V8 50i. This is the very reason most stick with a inline 6

Did they offer more explanation than you need a new engine, like what went wrong?

That's frightening, considering I have a 50i too. I hope everything goes smoothly.
Keep us updated.

I wouldn't be concerned about this just because you have a 50i. An engine failure can also happen (and has happened) to a 35i, or any other car on the street.

That can be said about anything. Is it fair to say that 50's had more issues than 35's?

I would say yes on average. But on the other hand, can the same thing be said about a 35i engine compared to the little 1.8L one in a Toyota Corolla? I'm sure yes. so would you freak out when you hear about a single event of 35i engine failure, and go buy a corolla instead?

The first gen N63 had its share of issues, but they are supposedly addressed in the N63Tu, so let's give it a benefit of doubt and not freak out from a singular engine failure event, which could happen to every car on the market.

Frankly speaking this is my 5th vehicle from BMW with V8 engine, I'd never encountered any engine issues with any of my previous vehicles, that's why I blindly pulled the trigger on 50i with a custom build and moreover it took 6 months from placing the order till delivery.

Officially nothing so far but i did ask the SA for a report prior recieving of the vehicle, but while i was chating with the SA he did mentioned that the main issue is the timming belt snapped and did some damages to the engine block since the timming belt on BMW engines are made of chain. I also insisted to visit there workshop to have a peak on the damaged engine but my request was denied since its part of BMW policy.

Actually it is frightening, I'll keep you all posted of the outcome as soon as I have a solid report in my hands.
What a great relief now i feel because when i received the vehicle i accepted the extended warranty from BMW which will cover the vehicle for 7 years and in return it cost me around $1500 for the additional two years.

You are not alone!
The first engine that changed my 750Li because of burning much oil 3 years car!
I am currently in the process of changing the second engine X6 40d because thundered small turbine engine replacement 4 years car!
After a conversation with Germany told me that they were normal to spoil their engines and rotate them!
Full of laughter and convinced me to buy another BMW, these are not normal!
I must be crazy to buy again BMW!

If I recall correctly in the last 14 months I ended up turning in the vehicle back to the dealer on 4 occasions due to oil top-up and two programming recalls, definitely there is an serious issue with this engine! Shame on BMW it will eventually affect their reputation.
I might consider other brand than BMW unless they update or invent a new version of N63tu engine.

For me 8 times after going to the workshop told me we can not fix that burns oil, so sell the car!
I had to write to the headquarters of BMW in Germany to change my engine!
