HELP! Purchase question

Hey All,

I'm writing on behalf of my sister who I'm am desperately trying to convince not to purchase a new MB GLE. She has been a Mercedes driver since 2005 and has selective amnesia when it comes to the various issues her 05 ML350 and 08 C300 have had.

I've been slowly chipping away at her and finally got her behind the wheel of my new 535 msport and she loved the drive. Then she saw a black X5 in a parking lot and that convinced her to take an X5 for a test drive next week.

Here's the issue: Mercedes Benz of Fort Washington (we are in the suburbs of Philadelphia) has given her an insane deal on a new GLE. The BMW equivalent of the car they offered her goes as follows:

Xline

Drivers assist & drivers assist plus

Luxury seating

Cold weather

Convenience

Automated park.

The sticker on the Benz was 64k but they are offering it to her for 54k. On the X5 it's 66 and I'm not getting it any lower than 62.

Could you guys let me know what kind of deals you're getting so I can see if the dealership I've been dealing with is being stingy or if it is in fact the best I'll do.

Thanks!

Mark

Take your deal to a few other BMW dealerships. Some are hungrier than others and will drop a little lower. The GLE is nowhere near the X5 in terms of drive and quality IMO. I went to a MB dealer to see it for myself and was disappointed with the general quality of the vehicle before choosing the X5.

Assuming the Mercedes is a brand new car without concerns of issues, I'd just let her buy it. Can't beat that deal!

What are the options on the GLE? Before I bought my X5, I drove a GLE for comparison and wasn't impressed of the Benz' handling. The dealer quoted us $57k on the truck with an msrp of $68k.

As suggested, look at other dealerships for a better deal. Remind your sister BMW covers maintenance and Benz do not.

Does the Benz have leather or Xenon/hid lights. I think now on Benz they do LED lights when you have the lighting package. Seems a lot of Benz cars don't have real leather unless you get that option or get into the the higher end model like the gle400.

She would be looking at a 16 so that's moot. Even 3 years beats MB

In Europe extra maintenance you could purchase (extended warranty, servicing, etc.). In the Netherlands for example you could purchase up to 6 years of maintenance and warranty (pricey but peace of mind). Now (after Easter) BMW instructed them that is no longer possible, maximum extended warranty (in Europe BMW has 2 year warranty) is an additional year which leads you to 3 years (max) in total.

Let her buy the GLE for $54K. That seems to be a great deal.

Not sure why you want to have a stake in what she drives unless the breakdowns on her prior cars have caused you some pain.

One of the other responses said it in jest but it's absolutely true...you'll be the one who convinced her to spend more money on a car that she wasn't really looking to buy in the first place. If it has any issues or if she has any reason not to be thrilled with it, it's always going to be your fault. Best to let her do what she wants to do.

Just curious what decision your sister ultimately made regarding her purchase decision.
