Steering

Do all the new BMW's have the same crappy steering as my last two X5's have. On my sixth one now and always thought they were the best until recently. Best way for me to describe it as very twitchy. Just rented a Kia and the steering was better.

I don't know. What were your last two X5s?

'12 E70 and '15 F15, no problems with either one of these two completely different steering.

I love the steering in our F15 X5 .... it feels better than the two Infiniti's we've owned (G37 and M37x).

Not sure what a 335 X5 is, but whatever you're driving, this needs to be looked at. Take it in this week, and let us know what they find.

Hmmm, my steering in the X5 is fine.

If you are having to make a lot of corrections while driving then it could be a few different things:
  • Your alignment could be out of wack
  • Tire pressures might not be even
  • How are the roads where are are? Do the lanes have a lot of crowning? The X5 has some pretty wide tires.

nope, the new M5 and M6 is just fine, bc it's hydraulic. The retuned CP versions has gotten rave reviews for its steering feel. So your "new" statement can't be true.

But seriously though, what you're experiencing is electric steering and it comes down to the software tuning and personal preference. The new F8X M3/4 apparently is really good.

Care to share your prior 5 BMWs?

Probably 20" wheels, which tend to tramline.

So you've owned a F15 before this one... Nothing has changed

You've had to F15s before. Should be the exact same as your current F15. I assume it's under warranty. Just take it in.

Don't know what the problem is - but I would say that the steering on the F15 is (IMO) much lighter than that on the E70. I noticed the difference straight away but very quickly got used to the F15. I noticed no real difference between my 2013 F15 and my 2017 one.

Actually I was hoping it would be better than the 2015. I've been told it's the change to electric steering.

Noticed I am constantly correcting my steering while driving with my runflats. Don't have that issue with my non runflat winter set up.

Coming from a 2012 X5 50i I also have noticed a much lighter steering feel. I'm sure that to some people the E70 steering felt overly heavy but to me it was perfect. Has anyone figured out a way to adjust the amount of electronic input via coding or any means? It seems slightly firmer in sport mode (still a world away from E70) vs comfort so I assume it possible to adjust somehow.

This is exactly what I experienced. I had the Dunlops 20" staggered setup and the tramline was definately noticable. I have Bridgestones now and its not an issue.

Just my experience.....

As I have mentioned in a few posts, the most effective and least costly coding you can do is between your ears - simply adjust to a different steering feel. My take on this steering issue is that it is slightly different, not better or worse. Our latest X5 tracks straight with virtually no steering input but all the road feel I want. I thought the steering on most of our previous Bimms was excellent but sometimes a bit heavy / more effort required. Now I am a big fan of the electronic steering. I am now pre coded for electronic steering
