Guide: How to add Apple CarPlay on your BMW

If your BMW didn't come with 6CP - Apple CarPlay Preparation as an option when you purchased it, fear not, here is a guide that will help you add that option to your BMW without voiding your warranty as it's done directly from the ConnectedDrive Store so no need for any coding that may or not void your warranty.

Note: In order to do this, your car must have iDrive 5.0 or above

1) Go to the BMW ConnectedDrive UK Site and create an account then login

2) Add your vehicle to your account by entering its last 7 digits of its VIN #, get the security code sent to your car by checking your BMW Messages from the Communications tab, then enter it in the site to confirm

3) From the main page,
scroll down until you see Apple CarPlay Prepartion then click on that image



4) Now click on Details



5) Now click on Book Now



6) Enter your address/payment details (Since I am in Dubai and don't have a UK Address, I used my freight forwarder's address, you need to enter some valid address otherwise you cannot proceed)



7) Now enter your credit card details for the payment (it costs $300 USD, one time fee)

8) You will then see this message confirming your booking:



9) AppleCar Play will now be added to your vehicle momentarily, in my case, it only took a few minutes although your mileage may vary.

10) Next, you wanna delete the phone you had paired with your vehicle previously and start a new pairing process. The images below are to guide you on how to do this and they are self explanatory:

have they found a way to make it work consistently...i have had my car for 2 months now... and its buggy as all heck...i turned it off and just utilize the bmw bluetooth connection as my primary interface...much more reliable

I'm not having the same experience. Other than connection issues early last week, mine has been pretty reliable. I was traveling so I missed out on a beta, but I updated late last week and since then it has been super reliable. I also updated to yesterday dev beta of IOS 10.3.3 build 14G5037b and it has been rock solid, connects every time within 10 seconds of starting the car. I'm thinking this version goes GR next week so there may be some help on the horizon.

* The Developer release notes have made no mention of Carkit/Carplay changes

Not working for my car. It's a 2017 X5. I've put in the correct last 7 of the vin and this comes up.

Apple CarPlay isn't as good as BMW setup imho. The only thing I do like about car play is that it displays and reads text messages...but o realize it's just easier to call...lol

You can always go third party alternative for a third of the cost.

Only reason I want apple car play is so for when I get an address texted to me I open it and maps and hit go and it displays it on the bmw screen instead of the phone.

Mine does that with IDrive. I can call phone numbers and navigate to addresses in text messages.

Per my SA, the download version is not the full functional version of the software, it is some kind of emulation. Despite that statement, I opted NOT to order the car play when I had my X5 ordered last week.

6NW included Enhanced Bluetooth (BT Media Streaming plus Office functions).

It replace 6NS on ID5 / ID6 systems. See comparison:

I have the 609 but not the 6NS even though I have the Bluetooth option, is there a way to activate this feature and does this also mean I can't get the bmw guys send me the code to my car when you register at connected drive store since I do not have the bmw messages under communication section as per the post.

Certain standard features, such as 6NH on an F015, are implied and not always listed in FA.

Any 2014+ vehicle with 609 has basic bluetooth for calls and media streaming. For additional features, you can code 6NS on ID4 or 6NW on ID5/ID6 systems.

I have no idea what you asking with regards to "bmw guys" sending you a code.

Ok, as per the post which says to get the Apple car play which I am posting it again below

"It says after you enter the last 7 digit the security code will be sent to your car and to check the BMW messages under communication tab, which I do not have it under my communication tab anything call BMW messages. So how do I retrieve the code ?
