Put the car in on Monday and the car was ready on Tuesday afternoon. My service advisor explained that this fix entailed replacing both front wheel hubs with bearings (Part No. 31-22-7-850-161). The first fix (done about a month ago) only entailed removing and resanding the original wheel hubs. Looking at the service order, they also replaced two collar nuts (33-41-1-133-785) and eight collar screws (31-20-6-783-065). |

The SA did say that BMW has taken a gradual approach to addressing this. Apparently the first "fix" works for some cars and delays the need for the more complete replacement fix that I just had. Accordingly, BMW directs its dealers to do the minor repair first before ordering the full replacement kits. My SA told me this the first time I came in. Unfortunately, I was back less than a month later. |

My truck is in now. Service manager is looking further to make sure it's not a front diff problem. I'll keep you guys updated. He's aware of everyone claiming front bearing issue. He's just going beyond to make sure it isn't diff.

Is it confirmed to be the bearing causing the clicking sound or is it the F85 two piece rotors? For those that is absolutely at the end of the straw you may want to consider swapping in the old E70 X5M rotors on since its the same exact size/fitment but its a traditional one piece rotor design (not cross drilled) The rotors are interchangeable.
Look at this article about the M5 brakes making clicking noises as they heat up and down. The X5M front rotors looks like the same design http://m5carblog.blogspot.com/2013/02/brakes.html "The front brakes do more work than the rears as the weight of the car shifts towards the front during hard braking and therefore there is more traction available at the front and more braking force needed there. The steel outer ring is completely symmetrical, so when it expands due to heat it does so uniformly without introducing any bends or kinks that can rub against the brake calipers As the brakes cool you hear them "ping ping ping" as the outer disk collapses back onto the inner aluminium ring via the pins. This isn't the cooling "ping ping ping" noise. We don't hear the noise when the car is coming to a halt; only when the wheels are turning does it happen--even if I just turned the car on from overnight.

^^ gotcha. It seemed like some get the noise only after some spirited driving but since yours makes this noise on a cold car then its something else...

Mine is not fixed entirely.
I'd say that with the spacer fitted per the bulletin, the clicking is about 80% quieter and does not happen more when turning like it did. Now, it clicks all the time in forward motion but much quieter. Go past some parked cars or a narrow street and you can easily detect it still.

I would say that mine clicks more quietly and only when turning in a tight radius. No clicking in forward motion. |

I'm having the same issue and dropped it off yesterday, currently the dealer is not willing to work on my vehicle due to aftermarket suspension, anyone have this kind of issue. Ty

I feel your pain. I think we are all in the same boat. I think the only solution is to be a thorn in your BMW dealer's side (and BMW NA, for that matter) for as long as you can and collectively, it will make it better for all owners. This is a real issue and will only grow as these cars age. Right now, the majority of the cars are under warranty and BMW is bearing the brunt of these repairs. But as we slowly move past 4 years and 50K miles, these cars will be expensive to maintain. I don't know what the parts and labor cost, but it will not be sustainable if you have to come back in every 1000 to 3000 miles. I had originally thought to keep this car for awhile, but now am planning to replace it before I get to that point. Think about it, I am sitting at seven months and 9000 miles. I have had the car in twice for this issue and the clicking is back (albeit softer). The first time was clearly a temporary fix -- the clicking was back within 500 miles. Even the more substantial, second "fix" did not completely resolve the issue. The only hope is that enough of us bring our cars in every time we hear this. Only then will it be in BMW's interest to solve the problem. The two "fixes" that I have had are not the solution. |
