that's true.
It's hard for people to be unconventional.

This is only true in some areas. There are a lot of nuclear, wind, solar, and hydro power plants all over the country that supply pretty significant amounts of electricity in a MUCH cleaner fashion.

Also, with average electric prices here in SE PA, to charge a Tesla Model S from zero to full would cost you $11-13. That car likely has the highest power output of any roadgoing electric car, so anything else will cost little enough to keep charged that you would realize a pretty good net savings when you take into account how much less gas you're using.

For X5e battery, the recharging means no need to buy trickle charger. However, new battery could be expensive after 4 years.
They do not have a lifetime warranty. Currently, BMW has an 8yr/100k mile warranty on the battery packs in the i3 and likely the i8. ActiveHybrids do not have an extended battery warranty. My guess, though, is that this X5 eDrive will have the extended battery warranty. Not lifetime, but pretty long. Tesla warranties their batteries for 8yrs unlimited miles.

I would also predict that these cars will come with a regular 3-prong cable to plug into a 110v outlet, with the option of using a higher-voltage charger for faster charges. A high-voltage charger would of course be faster, but might not be necessary for everyone as you mentioned.

For people like you with short commutes, if you see the benefit in never using gas again, something like the i3 would be perfect. Should only cost $3-6 to charge fully, and at 5 miles per day, you'll only end up charging once a week just for fun.

...it is a plug-in hybrid with a turbo-4, likely the N20.

If you want a X5, get one of the regular models. If you want an electric vehicle there are much better alternatives.
Sorry BMW, I would love a big electric car from you with decent range (500+ km at least) bit you have some catching up to do.
I think it's easy to come up with a reason why people would buy this. Some people have to have a hybrid for the sake of having a hybrid, and want the new X5 (let's face it, there are a lot of people out there like this, whether we like it or not). Others do, in fact, have very short commutes and don't care what kind of engine their X5 has, just that it looks the way it does, has the gizmos and features they want, and gets them around. This just gives the added benefits of electric drive, pre-heating and cooling (when plugged in), and fewer stops at the gas station, for a very minimal added cost in electricity.

To me, where I live, an all electric is completely worthless. There isn't a charging station within 250 miles of me that I know of. And even if there was, what am I going to do, stop halfway and spend 6 hours recharging?
Why not? The vast majority of the population in the US lives in populated North-East, populated Florida, Cali, and Texas. In all these areas, average commutes are shorter and electric charging stations are quickly becoming much more popular. In areas like where you live, sure, might be silly, but there are plenty of highly-populated areas where it actually makes more sense than a gas-powered car for some people.

I have no idea about charging stations in Oregon but I think you need to revise your knowledge about electric cars.
Ohh... And there's lots of people living in more populated areas so hopefully you can understand why they would like one...
Yes, I understand that some people in some situations in some locals can go with a full electric. In fact, I already said that. But for the rest of the world, saying the eDrive has no point, well, you are absolutely wrong. Did you even read the article? The beauty of the plugin hybrid is, I can drive it to work or the grocery store without the engine ever starting, just like an electric, but longer trips, I have the convenience of driving it just like a conventional X5. It's the best of both worlds. I can see going for a week at a time just on electric, then on the weekend when I am often traveling longer distances, it drives just like a regular car without concern for charging stations or range. In order to have a full electric car, I would also have to have a conventional vehicle, but a vehicle like the eDrive is like having two cars in one.
