Spartan Run

Anyone? My oldest son wants to do the one in LA on his birthday (32) in August. He thinks, for some wild-assed reason, that his pops is going to go thru that with him I see there is a kid's run, where is the old-farts division????

I did the tough mudder in Vegas it wasn't bad at all. I think the spartan is not as long correct? I went with a huge group all ages(oldest was 65), everyone finished. Go for it!

3-5 miles in LA. Big problem is that they don't say WHERE in LA. Could be San Berdoo, Inglewood, Castaic, . . . Not sure if I should start training with extra clothing to acclimate to the heat potential.

I did the Spartan sprint down in Temecula. I had trained 3 months for it and then it was rescheduled. Day of the race I was about 30lbs overweight and it kicked my arse. The obstacles were cake, upper body strength got me through that. The darn hills though absolutely destroyed me. Even though I finished I was dead. I could barely walk after. I never was a distance type runner, if you run on a daily you'll be fine. If you don't it will be a struggle. It is very fun though but those darn hills really suck.

Its a little under a 5k, but to be honest, its all about fun. They typically have a couple of groups that are actually competing to WIN it, but they always start before the regular people just looking to have fun. A lot of people walk/job between the obsticles, so its really not that bad at all. Do it!

I've done quite a few, Mud Titan, Mud Endeavor, Dirty Foot, Savage, Warrior Dash, etc. Poster above me is right, they're supposed to be fun. We do them with a group of 6-10 and take pictures and try to show each other up by doing obstacles they can't do or doing them faster.

I actually have one in about 2 weeks, Mud Titan 7 I think.

I do Spartans, started 3 years ago. Started with 6 months of training for the 5km (after 15 years of a desk job and 1000's of beers). then next year did my trifecta, that's a 5km (sprint), 12 km(super) and 25km(beast) in a single season. The trifecta was a stretch for my 44 year old body, now I'll just stick to the Sprints and Supers as they are fun.

Gives me a reason to continue going to the gym. Plus bonus is I'm 30lbs lighter.

And it's nice to be 44 and pass a bunch of younger weekend warriors in the hills and obstacles...not that I'm overly fast or athletic, but I can run the whole distance and do all the obstacles (I do fail some on occasion). And I enjoy a cold beer afterwards, plus lots to look at while at the event. If you are older hit obstacles cautiously so you don't injure yourself, as I see piles of folks get injured.

I run a couple times a week now, and I play adult co-ed soccer on Friday nights. I know this one hill, on a hiking trail that I love. Just not sure I can get up the energy to actually go TRAIN on that thing.

So, burpees are my friend now, I guess?

I see online that there are only like 50 slots left for the afternoon starts. Do they really sell out and close it down?

Wait a little while and find out.

I found that the race never sells out, but the best time slots do sell out. Our heats up here are maxed at 300, every 30 minutes another heat, I like the morning before the obstacles get too mucky and slippery. And if doing a group thing best to get all to register at same time or they may not get in the same heat.

I'm 48 and I do these things all the time, they're lots of fun. I've signed up for the Trifecta (sprint, super and beast in one year) this year. They remind me of my old British army days. Give it a go, you just have to go at your own pace.

There are at least 6 of us signed up so far, for a 10am start.

Yesterday I did a 3-mile loop that included twice over the freeway bridge, with sets of burpees at most corners/streetlights. I think I ended up with a baker's dozen. Started with 10, but probably averaged 6 or 7 by the time I finished. Work to be done.

I've thought about doing one of the many obstacle races, but I just can't deal with the mud and water... Mind you, I'm an ultra trail runner, but I just can't deal with yicky water holes.

Good on you for doing it with your son! I wish my son wanted to run with me, my daughter and I are doing a Marathon Bike Tour in a little over a week on a tandem bike, that should be fun!
