Talking Group Buy x5 50i Exhaust

BIMMERPOST / Classifieds
Asking Price:
None

Item Interest
Hey Guys and Gals,

After a little interest was shown into a custom exhaust system for our x5 50i's I decided to contact a friend that does beautiful fab work. We spoke and he is on board to help out.

Once we get moving on this we will:

- Test it
- Jig it
- Dyno test
- Take photos of the unit off and on the car
- Sounds clips of unit off dyno and on dyno
- Provide Dyno sheet of before and after
- Estimated price $1,500.00

I just need a quick poll to determine polished quad tips or matte gunmetal...

If your reading this and have interest, let's get a +1 and a quick vote for tips.

Thanks, Matt

Not sure how the 50 differs from the 35, but I'd be interested if they are similar. 35i m sport

This is still my daily driver, like I said, trying to find something that enhances the low RPM snarl while keeping the drone out, just something a little more aggressive without giving up sanity and driveability.

I just installed an ACS on my 5.0 - but would be interested in hearing this option. ACS might be a touch quiet for me..

I'm wondering how much the exhaust would affect mpg since I'm driving 80 miles per day to work. 50i M

Typically mufflers don't do much in terms of HP gain or for MPG, but from the one canister design on the x5 50i it could end up being pretty restrictive. Overall you should shave off a few pounds and get some power from the butt dyno, but until we actually have it on the dyno will we know what kind of efficiencies we have opened up. You can count on the same if not better MPG though.

A tune on top of the muffler would really open it up, however, I like my warranty's like my women, intact and not denied.

how did you come up with the $1500 price tag when you said a couple of hundred bucks in the other thread? (i knew it could not be done for that low but i am curious where the number came from.)

We thought to ourselves, how much does a typical cat back system cost for an American car? let's get aggressive with pricing and price out the rest of the European competition in the market with American pricing. Plus... It's not my shop, quality materials, quality craftsmanship, and it has to be worthwhile to him to drop what he does day in and day out to work on something with a considerably less gross profit margin. In the end the product will be of the same quality if not better than ACS or Hamann but for 1/4 the price.

That is what I said from jump street... There was no way you could do this at a reputable shop with quality parts for "$100 and an hour labor". I am eager to see the results but even more interested in hearing it.

How long until the first one is laid out and running on your vehicle?

With zero profit and my own shop I'd be able to do it for next to nothing, but it's not my shop and the owner wants to make something on it. The work will be immaculate and you'll be impressed and there won't be any inflation due to a BMW emblem on your car. It's called the wedding effect.

Was hoping to get my car over to him this weekend but might not be until Monday, he said 4 days to get one fabbed up in the shops downtime.

Nice. I believe the two hurdles will be exhaust tips and finding a can that is sized right but sounds good without the dreaded shift-burps/shift-farts. The more difficult of the two will be the tips the other will be trial and error. Again, curious to see how this shapes up and final product. If this looks good and sounds the part the two of you could be sitting on a money maker.

Actually after a couple days breaking it in, its the perfect tone. Not too loud perfect for my daily. The Hamann from most videos Ive seen is a bit loud for me for a daily, not to mention the price tag even used Both of my other cars have fairly loud exhausts so its nice to have a nice grunt without anything too wild on this one

I might be interested depending on how it sounds.

And I agree with others, pricing on aftermarket parts for these cars is just insane. Lol. You people have more money than I do to pay $4k for a metal box. Dont even get me started on the carbon fiber tack on crap.

***Update***

Haven't had the chance to drop the car off yet for the fab work as my father had a scare the other night and spent some time in the ER. I am taking it in for warranty work on Tuesday and it could take a day or two to get back. I am planning on dropping it off at the fab shop as soon as I get it back.

I will keep everyone posted. Thanks!
