Aftermarket Air Filter or Cold Air Intake

I haven't read any threads about this. I was thinking about K&N drop in filters or a cold air intake. I don't see anyone posting about these. Do they not work on x5's or is there not much performance? I figured it would probably work well with the MPPK?

no cold air intakes are available, only a handful of manufactures makes short ram intake for the X5, BMS and dinan comes to mind. K&N drop in panel filters yields no performance gains, only good as a replacement filter when ur oem gets dirty. do remember tho that K&N filters are usually oiled vs oem dry paper material filters. the oil is supposed to help with filtering and catching dirt, but some people dont like oiled filters due to the fact that the oil can be sucked into the intake track and coat the intake run/sensors if its oiled improperly.

Wow... thanks for the info. Usually that's one of the first things I change. I thought it was weird no one discusses it. Thanks.

Us BMW people are more educated than the other car brands

But seriously, K&N filter drop in filter does absolutely nothing for performance.

Doesn't do anything for your car. Car is designed and tuned to optimize performance already. This isn't a 1987 Honda Accord

Yeah I know it's not a Honda Accord. I had K&N intakes on my M6 which sounded awesome! Most BMW's benefit from getting more air into the motor. Your comment is ridiculous!

doesnt that apply to every and all engines in the world? fact is modern oem intakes are designed and optimized with the largest amount of air flow and least amount of restriction already, so at stock and close to stock power levels, any aftermarket intake will gain nothing other than noise.

Yeah, but intake noise = 10 street cred HP

Check out post# 126 http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...1233118&page=6

That's a dyno comparison between a "modern oem intake" and an aftermarket one on a BMW. +15hp and 25 ft.lbs by just swapping out the intakes

I know that Dinan makes a cold air intake that added 12 to 14hp on the X5M on a dunk. I guess the M stock intake isn't as efficient as the standard X5.

Just using aftermarket air filters will yield no gain. Stay away from oiled filters as they can screw up the MAF's. A proper cold air setup with larger ducting and a relocated intake would yield marginal gains.
For what it would cost, you're better off going with a tune from race chip or JB
