Is ECO mode even legal in the state of Washington?

http://apps.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=46.61.630

Coasting prohibited.
(1) The driver of any motor vehicle when traveling upon a down grade shall not coast with the gears of such vehicle in neutral.

(2) The driver of a commercial motor vehicle when traveling upon a down grade shall not coast with the clutch disengaged.

[1965 ex.s. c 155 § 74.]

I guess it depends on whether 'being in neutral' refers to the gear selector or the gear itself.

Interesting, I didn't realize it decoupled the gear:

I always wondered about this in other states too.

I suppose if you complained enough and BMW found your complaint to have merit they would just disable the ability to tick off coasting in the settings menu.

I had a similar question about the lack of spare tires. I thought spare tires were required.

And I did not know it uses GPS data to take elevation changes into account.

I hope eventually it will be used in other modes too, e.g. to get downshifts when slowing down to turn on to a hill.

If a company sells it in our state and they provide me legal resignation and license plates this is between the govt and BMW; not us, not like we made this modification.

You can disable the coasting feature in Eco Pro mode by going into settings > driving modes > eco pro mode

I don't think I've ever earned less than 31MPG in the highway.

realsgy WRT coasting, since the automatic transmission very quickly puts the car in gear upon touching the brake, or the accelerator, or a material turn in the road, I think they meet the spirit of the rule, even if they don't meet the letter.

I would say it is acting as another gear since the transmission can downshift as needed and one never shifts into neutral or out of it. It is all done by the transmission; the driver never shift into in neutral. That's my story and I am sticking with it.

Makes sense - which means nothing in the court. I don't think a cop would stop you and give you a ticket for driving in ECO PRO, that's not what I am worried about.

It is more like, you are driving down a grade, someone coming from a driveway fails to yield and you hit them. You think it is clearly their fault but their lawyer points out that you were breaking the law by coasting on a grade and goes for shared blame or even tries to put the whole thing on you.

I'd even argue the law says "the driver ...shall not..." The driver didn't, the car did.
