Dash cam install... Which fuse?

I know not another dash cam thread...

My Blackvue 650 should be arriving next week and going to do the install myself. Searched all the threads here and I haven't seen any solid confirmation which fuse we should be tapping into. I plan on using the fuse box in the back of the X5.

For those who have the power magic pro installed with the parking video enabled have you had any battery discharge warning issues pop up yet?

Thanks
Alan

Alan, this is the post on which fuse.
I have yet to play with mine, maybe today or tomorrow.

Thanks Ben.

I've been reading all i can about BMW's with dashcams and it seems like its inevitable that you'll eventually get the battery drain warning on your idrive. Not sure the benefits of recording while i'm parked out weighs the potential issues.

Well, the lowest setting that PowerMagic has is 6 hours of recording.
And the low voltage setting is either 11.8V or 12V.
But then, there is an on/off switch where you can switch is off when you park for long time. I plan to switch it off whenever I park in the garage overnight.

Hi Alan,

I have the two channel Blackvue 650 installed on my X5 30d with the Powermagic for six months. Very happy so far and no issues with the battery whatsoever (I have it stay on 12 hours after parking). After trying a few of the suggestions for fusion connections on the forum which did not work out, I found that connecting the red wire of the Powermagic to fuse 162 and the yellow to 107 (see photo - which should be rotated) worked perfectly. I don't know if the fuses are different between the 35i and 35d but I am using the tailgate for the permanent 12v supply.

Good luck!

Ray

Of course, please go ahead. Note that I corrected my post - one should connect the red wire of the Powermagic to fuse 162 and the yellow to 107.

Hi, sorry to revive an old post but I tried ACC on 162/142 and VCC/BATT on 107 but it doesn't seem to work
I don't have the fuse extension you have on the picture. I just try to roll the cables mettalic part around one of the fuse leg.

I am and have been an automotive tech for decades. Do yourself a HUGE favor and look at "automotive accessory fuse taps" on Amazon. Make sure the fuse in photo matches the ones in the fusebox. They work great and will not stretch the fuse terminals open and cause intermittent problems.

Thanks.
I'm going to order fuse taps, it should be safer and work better than just twisting it on the fuse end!

I ultimately tied mine into the interior overhead light. It has power for a few minutes (I think 8) after the car has been turned off. It was easy and super clean install. I just bought a 12v to USB adapter, mounted it on the ceiling above the light, ran the 12" USB cable through the rear view mirror cover. It looks super clean and factory, works great and no battery drain issues.
My Dashcam has a built in battery so it continues to record for sometime after the power source is off. Gives me recording long enough to go in and out of stores while still recording.

Do you have any pics of this install process? What did you have to remove and any difficulties with clips, etc? I want to do the same tap to hardwire my radar detector
