Wheel powdercoat question

Hi, I have a grey 2017 X5 with the M sport package. I love everything about the wheels except the color- I'd prefer them to be black.

Rather than drop $2800 or so on new wheels, I was wondering if powdercoating the existing wheels or painting might be a better option.

What I dont know though is how powdercoating or painting stacks against OEM black wheels in terms of looks and durability.

Anyone looked into this?

it all depends on how well the wheels are preped before painting/powder coating. if done properly, it will look good and last, but again its all down to how well the wheels are preped before hand. sounds like plastic dipping suits u more, cheap, looks good from afar, and can be removable down the road

What he said ^^

Just my 2c to add:
1. I had powder coated rims on my e90 and they flaked occasionally after light hits - like during tire rotation when mechanics weren't careful enough. The guy who did powder coating didn't prepped them well
2. OEM will be more durable and look better in the long run
3. Had same rims painted black (long before powder coating them) and paint held well, but still paint flaked off if I wasn't careful enough. Especially edge of rims was all cracked and flaked off. In the end I think it's very hard to beat oem factory finish
4. Plastidip is a temporary solution. It will look weathered after 1 month and will start to deteriorate. It's easy to apply and remove tho - so that's a plus at least

Easiest is probably to paint them, but i would have just sold them and bought some black rims, but it's easy for me to say

Powder coat is the best way.
The only thing, it will take sometime to get them done.
You just have to use a good and reputable shop to get it done.

You wouldn't drop $2,800 on them. Buy the wheels you want, OEM. Then sell your current wheels. Voila.

I definitely thought about this... but I've had problems selling wheels before. No fun to drop all the cash for the new set and then nobody will buy the old ones and they sit in my garage.

But that was craigslist. Maybe the classifieds here are better?

Well, you won't have any luck if you just have regular 19" wheels. But if you have 20" wheels, or 21" wheels, they will go rather quickly.

Maybe I would be okay then... they are the 20" 469M (M means M sport I think?).

I'm in the same boat. I have 469s and would like them to be black. What is a reasonable price for powder coating? Do most shops have the ability to take the tire off of the rim?

Probably looking at a couple hundred bucks per wheel. Need to make sure you find someone who's a stickler for quality work. Also, most mods shops that offer powder coating can remove your tires.

Well I wonder if this whole conversation was academic. I can't find the 469M Black wheels anywhere, even though you can order a brand new car with them. Called dealer and the parts guy flailed around- didn't even know what they were and offered me some 611M wheels instead.

Anyone know where I can find a set of the 469M in black?

I believe dealership got it powdered themselves and mark up the price.
I know for sure that BMWNA or BMW AG offered it in gloss black finish.

Powder coating

Had my M5 wheels powder coated 1 year ago. Cost was minimal $250 for 4 wheels. Had to take the tires off of the wheels and rebalance at a tire shop for $100. Wear is good with occasional nicks which I just use black touch up paint. Love the look though. I have a set of painted rims for my drag radials on track days- they do not wear as well as the powder coated.

Hi guys, I’m new here with a 2016 alpine white M sport xdrive 35i.
Read this post here so I wanted to add to it. Last Monday I dropped my wheels off at this local shop in Placentia CA. Picked them up Thursday gloss black with the new tires mounted and balanced. The shops rated five stars on Yelp and the owner Jay is a pleasure to work with. Mounted the wheels on truck and they look absolutely sick!

Welcome to the forum. Great first post. This is what I like about this forum, loads of knowledge and members willing to help each other out. Also, the shop's name and cost for the work done will help others in your area.

There is a shop in Tampa that does a lot of work for Tesla and a local Mercedes dealership. They quoted me $175 per wheel to refinish and powder coat. I should be dropping them off this week.

Hey thanks for the warm welcome Habsone! Shops name is Kings Powder Coating, and the price to remove old tires, powder coat the wheels, mount and balance the new tires came out to $350.00
tried to add pictures here but somethings up with the file size.
