Broke in my car last night

They stole the navigation screen and i guess the whole unit potentially, broke rear glass, etc. so yes the screen is a nice design but easy to take out.

Wow, that is terrible. At least they were nice enough not to damage the dash. Looks like they clearly knew what they were doing.

Well they damaged the trim a bit. Was told I am the 4th one this morning with the same issue. Apparently they steal navi pro system for sale as it can be retrofitted easily instead of the business one.

I'd go ask your local service center who the last guy was who didn't want to pay $1700 for the I drive screen and get his address.

Sorry to hear, sucks people are complete asshats.

Did this happen in Holland? Car parked on the street? Unfortunately, Western European countries have a problem with roving gangs that target specific vehicles and specific parts of those vehicles. I remember back in the days, Audis were targeted for their HID headlights. Or they'd hit a BMW dealership and steal all the wheels one night.

You are lucky not the entire car was stolen...

I read in the newspaper that smaller villages are now being targeted since there is an increase in the amount of CCTV cameras in the city. Fun times.

I was just focused on the idrive screen and I now see where they smashed in the consol below. Hopefully the dealer can get everything replaced quickly and looking as good as new. Do you know if your alarm went off?

That really sucks. They look like they've definitely done it before. What's the difference between a navi pro and business?

What is funny is that most people who see my nav screen ask if it is a iPad or something similar... They always ask if I am able to take it out. Maybe if BMW made the screen hide away like others it would help deter the theft? I'm not sure.

Good luck with your repairs! I hope that BMW can fix everything back to original.

I know it's semantics, but did they cut the wires or were they kind enough to just unplug them? It almost look like they were courteous thieves. If that were Chicago, somebody would have used a crowbar and peeled back the entire dash.

As odd as it sounds to say... I'd feel pretty lucky that they were as surgical as they were.

Cheers to your car's recovery and I'm sure you'll be back in business soon!

I thought the same as you, but look below at the thermostat controls.

That feature would be a "nice to have" ....just like the B&O pops up...

Yeah but it wasn't smashed... It actually looks like it was just popped out and can clip right back in.

Not uncommon, and actually what you see what happened in the OP's car is the norm. The gangs know exactly what they are doing, and will make it a "mission" to go after specific parts that are being requested. For example, at the port of Zeebrugge in Belgium, a gang targeted Mercedes and stole airbags and keys out of 374 cars all at once.

In the OP's case, the thieves would have practiced removing this part carefully, and they simply repeat it car after car. It's a clean operation, and can be in an out in minimal time. Too bad the window had to be smashed, as normally they can circumvent that also.

I guess the level of "sophistication" amongst thieves appears to be much higher in Europe vs the States.
As others have stated, the only consolation here is that they were indeed fairly surgical. In my earlier years, when I parked on the street and was out late at night more often, break-ins to steal my stereo gear worth a few hundred ended up costing thousands in damage repair to the interior as well as the body.
Very sorry to hear/see, OP. Hope you're back to good quickly!

The trend has gone away from pop-up screens to fixed/exposed ones for some reason. Not sure if it's a "show-off" thing or reducing another point of failure (motor broken or screen gets stuck in either position). One of THE worst new implementations has got to be MB. The little square screen looks like it is suctioned cupped to the dash and stands out like a sore thumb. At least the BMW screen is wide/low and somewhat integrated into the dash.
I'll bet everyone moves towards the Tesla and Volvo gigantor all-in-one command center...

that's a shame to see this happening in Western Europe...living there for shy of a decade, never had issues...especially in this caliber.
I would suggest you take the photo off...this only teaches other gangs how to do it...

@Doanster ... I would bust a nut if they incorporated the Tesla dash into my X5. Looks like the new ATMs at Chase. Lol.
