Hey Kief I knew you were the OP
Have you brought this up with the dealer or BMWNA? I have read in the other forums from the E70 X5 owners with Msport that they were able to get BMW to repaint and add the 3M protection under their cost since BMW is aware of the design flaw.

Hi Taran.J yeah, it appears that this problem only exist to wider front wheels I think 275 and up. I am not sure what width your front tires are.

255/50 stock BMW specs. I had wider wheels put on for a VMR Photoshoot but that was only 50ft of driving with them lol

BTW I think some people are confusing rock chips on the front of the X5.. but we are referring to the road debris that gets kicked up from the front tires into the front panel of the rear tires as illustrated area shown in orange.

I'll have to check my paint tonight. I owned the F70 for a few months and with the more exaggerated wheel flares (than the F15) that model had a serious problem with the chips. BMW agreed do to a one time paint job on the flares but would not cover the costs of any film application. When I moved to the F15 I was really hoping (and assumed) that this design flaw had been addressed.

My F15 is now over a year old and I guess at some point we'll all have to accept that it's just another vehicle on the road and damage will happen. Just last week I got my wind-shield cracked by a rock on the highway, if it hit the hood I'm certain it would have chipped the paint.

Also take into consideration on the F15's the aero scoop. I will be closing mine from within the wheel well and see if it makes a considerable decrease in MPG.

There is a lot of debris coming through that thing to the center of the front doors as well.

Hey Taran, Yes, I did consider this but I thought there was a small mesh in that insert? I didn't take a closer look to confirm. Also please note that the previous generation E70 had the same issue and of course there was no air curtain on them.

No, I have yet to bring it up.

After washing it this weekend, I noticed how the left side is so much worse than the right side. Wife must make a lot of right turns...like UPS!

I too read threads when we had our E70 of a few guys getting it repaired. I hate the idea of having any surfaces repainted, but if it bothers me too much, it's the only solution.

As I mentioned earlier, it's interesting how my M4 came from the factory with film protection right in front of the rear wheel wells, but our X did not. Why provide it for one series and not others, especially when there is a history of a problem???

Well the last time I replyed about this issue I was hung on a cross with daggers so I will keep it simple.....
I totally agree that BMW is wrong for putting protective film on one car and not another, it's a crazy and stupid situation for all of us, but keep in mind that if you have the 20" or larger wheels/tires you will have some major road rash unless you put a protective film on. My feelings are that if you want to keep the paint prestine get it wrapped. Yes, I'll say it again the manufactur should provide it in areas more prone to damage, but that's not happening. I do understand that if you bitch and complain BMW will paint and provide protection to that lower rocker panel. Being I don't want some crappy film put on by some hack the dealership uses, I rather go to guys who know how to wrap and use the best film like Xpel Ultimate. I figure you spend $65,000 to $120,000 on our BMW's, spending $3,000 to wrap it is nothing.

Just checking if this is still an issue amongst the owners of the X5.

Thanks

s1k0ne , I got 22" and been over a year. No problem so far.
I never drive the car hard on the gravel, mostly highway and surface street.
I just annoys me when I just got the tire glazed, it left a bunch of black spots all over the sides. So, I don't glaze my tires as much now.

Hey, I am in Baldwin Park, CA.
Unfortunately I don't have experience with Xpel installer.
Look it up here and yelp them for the review.

Ben I think you are safe because your X5 is RWD. I suspect if your front wheels spin then it would be more prone to kicking up road debris like the AWD xDrive version.

You probably right. The AWD probably will kick the debris much harder than RWD.

it's to be expected when you have painted flares that stick out. Only fix I can think of is to do a custom clear vinyl wrap on the troubled panels.
