At first, i hated the X6 but…...

Now i see its purpose!!! As an X5 owner the X6 never made sense to me. Why get the same SUV with less storage space? Well i have my M5 sitting in the garage that i can never drive since its always snowing or raining or salt on the roads, etc. I have only 3800 miles on my '13!! So as a replacement for the X5? Nope. makes no sense to me still! But as a replacement for the M5?? X6M makes perfect sense! Its just as quick (maybe quicker on these roads) and i can drive it year round! It handles better than the X5 and much more sporty. So now that it makes sense, its really tempting me to sell the M5 and get the X6M! I think i would actually enjoy driving it more. I love my X5 35D for a daily driver. I think an X6M would be a great 3rd car (also have a Ford Raptor for truck duty).

I think it's a solid idea. 3 SUVs in the garage - all with different specs and uses, but all able to drive in ANY weather...seems perfect. Of course, an M5 is a beauty and a great car....no denying its handling/capability/poise. I'm sure many will chime in and say don't do it because no SUV will compete with a sedan (lower to the ground, etc). Maybe the alternative would be to wait for the AWD M5?

Im actually really surprised with the way the x6 handles, especially in sport mode. i often finding myself flying through big round abouts like "S" bends with minimal body roll... VERY impressive...

AWD M5 would be awesome. I don't go powersliding around the streets anyways! I just get annoyed when i put my foot down and either tires spin or traction control comes on. Lucky if i see 0-60 in 6 seconds in the M5 here. I think the X6M would handle great for me. I'm not planning to track the M5. Its in too perfect condition. Not one chip or swirl. It just sits in the garage too much. I do love the car but just can't really enjoy its performance here.

I was looking at the X6 as a replacement for an SUV which i just could not wrap my head around. Now looking at it as a replacement for a performance sedan it makes perfect sense! Kind of half between the M5 and X5 really. I'm digging it!

Yeah, makes perfect sense to me. The fact that you're getting 0-60 in 6 seconds and not less boggles my mind. I guess it has too much wheel spin after all. Here's where an AWD system is just lovely . My 50i with RaceChip is easily under the 4.5 second mark sitting at 522hp/564 torque - I really can't wait to test the DashCommand with OBDlink scanner. I saw the X6M in Laguna Blue Blue at the DC Auto Show parked next to the F15 X5 50i in Mineral Silver, and it was definitely a wonderful vehicle to see. Too bad I couldn't sit in it. They locked all the M vehicles (for a good reason too).

Just kidding... no way can I afford a 4th car in the already over-crowded garage, not with Her Majesty holding on the family purse strings .... grrrrr

I love the blue!! But all our cars are white. Either white with red interior or blue with the orange/brown interior. I'd like to see that blue in person. Most pics i love it but some look different. Since you have seen it do you have a link to a pic that properly represents the color?

My racechipped 35d is faster 0-30 than my M5! All about traction here. I'd bet my X5 50i was faster 0-60 than the M5 as well. After 60 its game over but to me the 0-60 is the whole point of a fast car!

I still don't get it. Your logic amounts to comparing the X6M to an X5. If you want the performance of an M, I certainly understand. (I have one). If you want the performance of an M that you can drive year round, I certainly understand that also... Like you, my M is parked in the garage most of the winter. But if you're going to go with an SUV, why not go with the X5M. The best of all worlds, and I can't believe there is a noticeable difference in performance, if any at all, between the X5M and the X6M. And the X5M doesn't look like If your logic took you to an X5 over an X6 because it makes no sense to reduce the storage capacity of an SUV for no apparent reason, it seems the same logic applies to the X5M vs. X6M.

I have a brand new X5 35d. Thats my daily ride! 30+ MPG highway thats the road trip machine!! I'd not want 2 X5s. I'd not feel right having an X5M as a daily driver either. I'm keeping the 35d its perfect. The M5 just gets hardly any driving time here so the X6M is looking very appealing to me to replace that car as my "toy".

I definitely see MysticBlue's point of view. I personally would also get an X5M because I prefer it over the X6 shape and like the extra size, but both are going to be fantastic to drive. Still, the Laguna Beach Blue X6M left a good impression upon me at the DC Auto Show when I initially didn't like it at all. However, like you said, you want something "different" than what is in your garage and that is your own feeling/opinion, which matters most. I don't have pictures of it. It was way too crowded by people so I couldn't get a great picture of it next to the Mineral Silver 50i. This just shows you how popular both the new X5 and the X6M were at the DC Auto Show. The color has a nice Turquoise Aqua hue...it just looks really really unique/nice. I was blown away by the color in person. The video does a pretty great job. I love the exhaust notes. Pay attention from 50 seconds to 1 minute mark where you can actually see the sun hitting parts of the paint. That really brings out the true color (this is what was seen under the lighting at the Auto Show):

I have an X5 35d, had a new M3 for a while (dealer was very very nice to me while they were fixing a couple of things on my car under warranty) and I loved the engine, handling and the presence of the car and basically I like everything about it (well almost, the sound of the engine with windows open could have been better, cold start was amazing though). After a while, I thought the car was wearing me out, it was low and I always had to step on the gas to really enjoy it. On longer trips it would just make me too tired compared to the X5, I thought then M5 would be ideal. After this all new X5M came out, I think that would be ideal for me. If you already have an X5 35d I would go for the X6M, makes perfect sense. I hope you order it asap as the M5's value though mint will start to deteriorate. Also important to mention is that at least from the review videos, the sound of the X6M is just fine .

I understand. My own feelings are similar. I got the X5 to be my everyday ride, snow machine, and for longer road trips. If I could only have one vehicle, I would lean towards an X5M I suppose. There is a lot of compromise there regarding performance (compared to an M3 or M5) but that is the nature of getting one vehicle to try to be everything. But if I am going to have two vehicles, I really don't want to compromise on the performance of the "toy", even if that means I can't drive it a few months out of the year. (That's why I got the X50i as opposed to the X35i... to keep me satisfied in the winter). I just can't see having two vehicles that are so similar in size as the X5 and X6M. I have never driven an X6M, but I imagine there is quite a difference between it and your M5 in performance. That's what I mean by compromise. Just bouncing my thoughts out there. Everyone has different views, and since you brought it up on a forum, I assume that's what you are looking for. Ultimately, car decisions at this level are emotional... Nobody NEEDS an M5 or an X6M or whatever, so most people go with their gut and whatever they can afford. My gut would just never let me go for the X6 or X6M no matter how much I could try to justify it with logic. I just could never get past the looks. Call me shallow.

OP, do you really need all the cargo space X5 has to offer?
Do you have more than 2 kids?
I would just sell X5 and M5 and get X6
Better performance, decent utility
You still have your Raptor for extra utility

I can guarantee you, once you drive X6M, your X5d will collect dust
It's a great toy and DD

Well we just took a trip last week and had the X5 cargo space stacked to the ceiling! And the 30+ MPG is really nice. I would not want to drive an M car across country with my wife and 2 kids. Heck my M5 gets 11mpg! X6M has to be worse. To me an X6M would be just a bit too hairy for a daily year round car but would be great for alone driving. If you are married with small kids you would probably see what i'm talking about there. Lol. The 35d is great (perfect) for that duty. I'm looking at the X6M more as a beefed up/tall RS7 type fun to drive car. I like the x drive and love the Driving position. The Raptor is for hauling my bikes and stuff. Its rubbish to drive otherwise. Looks cool though.

I like this analogy. If we didn't have wet crappy pot-holed roads, plus a need for AWD to get to the mountains, I'd buy an M5 in a heartbeat.

I don't have room for two cars.... but I want something that's still fun to drive, unique to look at, and doesn't make me resent not being able to have something "fun and sporty".

I don't need the "practicality" of the X5M, and happen to love the way the X6M looks.... so it's a great solution for me.

When this one comes up for replacement though, it'll be a harder choice if the next-gen M5 is AWD....
