Help with updating Navigation Maps

I was curious on how to update my maps. I did a search online and these are the steps that I found.

1-Format a USB Flash drive with a memory of at least 4gb to FAT32.
2-Copy the Map file to the USB
3-Get a FAC Code from BMW specific to my Vin
4- Insert the USB in the car.
5- Wait for the update to start
6- When asked for the FAC Code, type it in.
7- Screen will turn off once update is done.
8- Congratulations you have the newest map.

My question(s) is, where can I get the latest map for my region and how can I get the FAC Code?

If anyone has a better/different way of doing this please lead me to the right direction or feel free to post it here.

As always I'm grateful to this forum.

What you describe is something like I did with my 2012 X5, but I have read that we now have free auto-update maps.

At the moment, all I could find were blogs but I thought I first saw this in a BMW USA YouTube video or like source:

http://www.autoevolution.com/news/in...ces-90765.html

http://www.bmwblog.com/2015/01/06/bm...vigation-maps/

Edited to add: Maybe this is the source that I took as official BMW announcement:

I can't comment on your area maps but for the UK & Europe area you need a 32Gb USB drive, the 2015 update for Europe is approx 28Gb.

I just updated my maps this morning to HA Next 2016-1. It is such a breeze now since one USB stick is all that is required and it is done in 40 minutes.

Looking over the settings, I was reminded that I do not really know what it means to select "prefer express roadways". Can someone explain to me what this means? A Google search came up empty.
